Review- Revenge by Lexi Blake

Summary-

Passion and danger collide in the latest contemporary romance featuring the Lawless siblings—from New York Times bestselling author Lexi Blake.

When Drew Lawless discovers a fatal flaw in his plan to avenge his parents’ deaths, he turns to the one woman he'd promised he wouldn't touch. He offers her a deal, one that will bring her into his investigation, his life, and his bed.

Investigative reporter Shelby Gates never dreamed how twisted the case would become—or how fascinated she would be with Drew. Every day they spend together binds them. And every night brings her closer to realizing he might be the man for her.

As Drew's feelings for Shelby grow, so does the danger. From the streets of Dallas to Austin’s high-tech business world, Drew and Shelby play a game begun twenty years before—a game they will win, or die trying.

Review-

Revenge is the third and final book in Lexi Blake's Lawless Brothers series. I have been following this series right from the beginning so I was eager to know how it would all play out for the Lawless siblings. I have to stress that Revenge cannot be read as a stand alone. The series has a continuous plot with each brother getting a story along the way. So you have to read the series in order to understand what's going on and the history each character has. I enjoyed Revenge.

This is the story of the oldest Lawless sibling Andrew. As the title suggests after the murder of his father, Drew has been on a quest to find the truth. He'll do anything to get his revenge. He has waited long enough to get justice for his siblings. But for his plan to work he needs the help of an investigative reporter- Shelby. Now as for Drew, he was hell bent on revenge at first. Drew's personality is unlike any of his siblings. He is cold and practical at best. He doesn't deal with emotions and all his life he's been taking care of his family. Drew was the least selfish man I've met. He never once thought about himself and was always ready to sacrifice what was needed of him.

Then we have Shelby. Where Drew was cold Shelby was warm. Shelby's brother got murdered while investigating a case. Shelby hasn't been able to get over that or the case which surrounded his death. It just so happened that it involved the Lawless siblings. Now Shelby is involved but she can't seem to stop herself from getting close to Drew, from comforting him and from taking care of him. Shelby was an extremely like able heroine.

Drew and Shelby's relationship starts off as a contract which would help them both. But Drew being the practical guy that he is plans to protect his family first then deal with Shelby. But things change soon as expected. Shelby brings out the human side of Drew, makes him look at a situation from both sides. And all along Drew was there to protect Shelby. Lexi Blake knows how to write romance and steamy scenes and there are plenty of those in this book.

Along with the romance we also find out what really happened that night twenty years ago. Secrets are revealed and there are some really psychotic characters in this series. With some action there are twists and turns. I liked seeing all the Lawless siblings together one final time. There are some new additions but the bonds of friendship and family remain strong. Revenge was a nice conclusion to the series.

REVIEW:

I literally go mad when I see David Levithan books in Indian bookstores and whenever that happens, I just have to buy the books. That's how I came across Marly's Ghost, which, very shockingly and disappointingly, I hadn't even heard of until I saw it and just couldn't resist purchasing a copy for myself. When I released that the book was less than 200 pages long or short, I decided to give it a go.

In its essence, Marly's Ghost is a very David Levithan-esque book, and by that I mean that it portrays very complicated and deep but daily thoughts in a very simple manner. When Ben's girlfriend Marly dies, her ghost pays him a visit followed by three more spirits who end up teaching Ben practically everything he needs to know to move on. Like every male character by the author, Ben was also very cool, smart and extremely likeable.

While I did really like this short, simple and stunning book, I have to admit that I do have some mixed feelings about it, because I wish it were longer and I also wish it were more complex. I'm not saying that the book wasn't great, because it was, but I just wish it gave me more. Other than that, however, the story was very intriguing and unique, which I thoroughly admire.

Overall, Marly's Ghost is a nice read for young readers. It definitely doesn't live up to the other books by King Levithan, but it still managed to leave an imprint on my heart because of the very lovely and clean message that it came with. And as usual, the writing made the book and the story more stunning.

EXCERPT:

“Van.”
I spin at the sound of Ben’s voice, and silently cringe. I look horrible. I’m sweating like an ice cold drink without a coaster, and the clothes I wear here are skin tight, making it easier to move.
“You’re not usually here at this time,” I say and dab a towel on my face. “What’s up?”
“I had a meeting with another instructor,” he says with a smile. “Thought I’d say hi.”
“Hi.” I smile and readjust my ponytail. It’s much smaller now, but I can still pull it back. “How was your day?”
“Busy,” he replies and surprises me by letting his eyes travel up and down my body. “I like the new hair. You look great.”
“I’m a mess.” I chuckle and hook my towel around my shoulders. “You, however, do look great.”
That’s a fucking understatement. He’s in cargo shorts and a black tank top, showing off his tattoos and his muscles.
Good lord, the muscles.
“Can I show you a few things?” he asks, breaking my concentration on his muscles.
“Sure,” I frown as I follow him back into the empty classroom. “Am I doing something wrong?”
“No, I just want to go over some form things.” He leads me to the center of the room and stands behind me, looking into my eyes through the mirror.
Oh God. This is way sexier than it probably should be.
“Assume the stance.”
I follow his directions and work very hard to not react to his strong hands on my sides as he walks me through punches, kicks, and better ways to keep my center of gravity.
“You’re small,” he murmurs and pushes my legs just a little closer together. “I want you to keep your feet just a little closer together. You’ll have better balance.”
I nod. “It feels better.”
He smiles at me. I can’t keep my eyes off of him in the mirror. The way he moves, his facial expressions.
Ben has always been attractive to me, but holy shit, did he get hotter? Or was I just too broken before to see it?
Because holy shit, he’s hot.
“Van?”
“Yeah?”
“I just asked you to do the spin/elbow move.”
“Oh.” I bite my lip and will myself to stop ogling his arms.
“Are you okay?”
“Of course.” I do as he asks and spin, attempting to ram my elbow in his nose, the way I’ve been taught, but he blocks and sends me onto my ass. “Damn it.”
“You’re not spinning quickly enough.”
“I’m as clumsy as they get,” I remind him. “If I spin too fast, I’ll fall on my ass. I’ll be helping my attacker more than anything.”
“It’ll actually feel easier,” he says, helping me to my feet. “You can do this. I’ve seen it.”
“You’re taller than anyone else I’ve ever sparred with.”
“Good,” he says and narrows his eyes. “Chances are, if you ever have to defend yourself, your attacker won’t be shorter than you.”
“True.” I nod thoughtfully.
“But if you’re still not comfortable doing this with me, that’s fine. I can make suggestions for Shelly to work on next week.”
“I’m okay,” I reply, and am surprised to realize that it’s true. It wasn’t long ago that I couldn’t stand for any man to touch me, not even my brothers. But I don’t mind so much now.
In fact, I’m utterly shocked to realize that his touch is turning me on. I don’t remember the last time I had sexual thoughts toward a man. Even Ben. Which was one more thing that made me sad.
But hello, long lost hormones.

Review-

I love Samantha Young's new adult and adult books, especially her very popular On Dublin Street series. Her books are emotional and wonderfully written and always leave me with a happy feeling. The Impossible Vastness of Us is Samantha Young's young adult book. It basically focuses around three teens and what's going on in their lives.

The main character in The Impossible Vastness of Us is India. The whole book goes from her point of view. When India's mother decides to marry, India is forced to move across the country. Her new step father is rich, like extremely rich and he has a daughter of India's age. India soon finds that all is not what it seems with her new step sister Eloise and her boyfriend Finn. And everyone is keeping secrets.

I really liked India as a character. She had had an extremely difficult and abusive childhood at the hands of her father till her mother rescued her. Now all India wants is to get through high school and she knows no one can hurt her if she's popular. India was a girl with her head on her shoulders. She was strong and determined and all she wanted was to be independent in her life. With all the new changes happening in her life the last thing India expects is to be attracted to her step sister's boyfriend Finn.

Finn was the typical mysterious teenage boy when India first sees him. But things are definitely not what they seem with him. He's hiding something and all India wants to do is take away the sadness she sees in his eyes. Eloise on the other hand only wanted to be the perfect daughter for her father. She knows her reputation would be ruined if her secret came out.

Samantha Young's writing is amazing as well. I could understand so clearly what was going through sixteen year old India's head. When secrets are revealed things become complicated and feelings get tangled. One thing I'd like to clear is that there's no cheating involved in the book. I was hesitating for that reason before I knew this. And I'd also like to point out that I loved the way Samantha Young said in the book -sometimes its not the happy ending that matters but the right ending- and that's exactly what we got in The Impossible Vastness of Us. This was a good read.

EXCERPT-

“Headmaster Vanderbilt would like to introduce himself.”
Headmaster Vanderbilt turned out to be a guy probably only five years or so older than Theo. I expected someone stuffy, pretentious and more than a little condescending, but Headmaster Vanderbilt—a tall, reed-thin man who wore a tiny pair of rimless glasses perched on his big Roman nose—was warm and welcoming.
His welcome, in fact, would be the warmest I’d receive that day.
My first class was Microeconomics and to my horror Eloise, Finn and their whole crew took the class. I hadn’t been expecting to see them all together in one class and while the teacher introduced me I had to quickly put my mask of indifference on.
Eloise didn’t acknowledge my presence as I took a seat on the other side of the classroom. My eyes drifted to Finn but he was staring at the teacher, almost too studiously, like he was trying to avoid my gaze. I shook that suspicion off, knowing Finn thought he was superior to me—I probably wasn’t even on his radar.
Not that I cared if I was on his radar or not.
My Microeconomics teacher was pretty cool and I got through the class not feeling totally out of my depth. I considered that a positive for the day.
Fiction Writing was next and Charlotte was in my class. When I walked in, her eyes lit up and I thought I detected the beginnings of a smile before a thought passed over her expression. Her shoulders slumped, and she looked like she wanted to blend into the background.
I decided to ignore her weirdness and waved at her as the teacher approached to introduce herself. The teacher saw my exchange with Charlotte and insisted I sit with her.
“Hey,” I said as I took the seat beside her.
Charlotte gave me a half smile, half grimace. “Hi.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t cheat off you.”
Her answer was a tremulous smile.
Encouraged, I nodded at her violet dress. “That color looks awesome on you.”
Appearing almost taken aback, Charlotte glanced down at the dress and ran her fingertips over it. “Really? Bryce said it washed me out. She said I look trash in it.”
Of course she did. I got more than a few mean girl vibes off that girl. “Well, she’s wrong. It’s really cute.”
“Thanks.” Charlotte gave me a shy smile before wariness replaced it and she turned determinedly to face the front.
Her body language told me not to push talking to her, but I felt hope.
Smiling inwardly, I faced forward, too, and listened to the teacher as she started class.
Two classes passed and I already had more homework than I’d ever had back at Fair Oaks High. I wasn’t freaking out about it just yet, considering I had no friends and no extracurricular activities to distract me from all the schoolwork, but once I did I’d have to find a way to juggle it all.
As I was walking toward my next class I noticed the glances and full-on stares from my new schoolmates. Their looks varied from curious to sneering and I felt a tingle of wariness across the back of my neck. Turning a corner on my search for my Modern European History class, I came face-to-face with my stepsister-to-be and her girls. They sashayed down the hall like an ad for a TV show about beautiful popular high school kids, long hair fluttering out behind them like silk, long trim legs on display in their designer dresses and elongated by their Jimmy Choo sandals.
Eloise saw me, looked right through me and kept on walking without a word.
My skin felt hot with embarrassment at her obvious cut.
I watched her disappear around the corner with her best friends before looking around the hallway. That’s when I realized I hadn’t been imagining the sneers of my classmates.
A sick feeling settled in my gut as I wondered what the hell was going on.

Review-

I really enjoy Lauren Layne books from time to time so I was excited to read I Knew You Were Trouble. This is actually the fourth book in her popular Oxford series. You don't need to have read the previous books in the series as this one easily stands alone but I would highly recommend that you do as there are multiple recurring characters. Overall, I liked I Knew You Were Trouble but it was definitely not my favourite read from Lauren Layne.

So this is the story of Taylor and Nick. Taylor and Nick have been circling each other since a long time. We actually get to see a few glimpses of them in the previous book. This book starts right at the beginning and let me tell you, these two have taken their time with each other. Let's start off with Taylor. Taylor is hard working and determined but she is clueless when it comes to anything emotional. I liked Taylor as a character. She had been called an ice princess her whole life but she didn't know how to be any other way. When we finally get to see her vulnerabilities we understand her insecurities and abandonment issues.

Nick on the other hand is the complete opposite of Taylor. Nick is rough around the edges to Taylor's perfect persona. He works as a free lancer at Oxford while working part time as a bartender. His image seems to be of the carefree commitment phobic but the reality of the situation is something very different. Nick was a very caring guy. He loved his family and wanted a real relationship though he had been badly burned in the past. I loved how protective Nick was of Taylor.

Nick and Taylor start off as adversaries but it is easy to see their chemistry underneath all the barbs they keep throwing each others way. Lauren Layne is some what of a specialist where it comes to enemies to lovers romance and this is a classic example of that. For the most part, I enjoyed the romance. The surprise at the end was alright for me, not a deal breaker but not entirely satisfying.

My only complaint here is that the ending felt super rushed to me. I think Nick and Taylor should have been given more time to deal with the situation and to accept for what it really was. Nick messes up and though Taylor does forgive him I just felt they needed more time. But I enjoyed seeing all the characters from the Love, Sex and Stilettos series as well as the Oxford guys. I can see that Lauren Layne is trying to set up another couple from this book so maybe this is not the end of the Oxford series. Yet.

REVIEW:

Up All Night is a collection of six very unique and very interesting short stories, written by six very brilliant authors. In the collection, there are: Phase 2 by Peter Abrahams, Not Just for Breakfast Anymore by Libba Bray, The Vulnerable Hours by David Levithan (the reason why I decided to read the book in the first place), Orange Alert by Patricia McCormick, Superman is Dead by Sarah Weeks and The Motherless One by Gene Luen Yang (which is more of an illustration with dialogues, really). Aside from David Levithan, all the authors were new to me and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I relished both their story-telling and writing.

The book begins with a lovely introduction by publisher Laura Geringer, who has, very meticulously and poignantly, summarised every story in barely a line and it manages to both give a slight glimpse into the story and pique the reader's interest. I never really bother writing about introductions and all, but this one really stuck with me because it was done so well that I couldn't not say something about it. Besides, Geringer has published a really, really nice book with stories that are creative, touching and thought-provoking.

Coming to the stories, like I mentioned before they were all very well written and told. Some of my favourites are basically all of them, expect Not Just for Breakfast Anymore and The Motherless One, because while the former was very long as compared to the rest and slightly incomprehensible as well, the latter was fun to read, but a narrative would've been much better. Keeping that aside, however, the collection was varied and covered up a bunch of stuff.

Phase 2, The Vulnerable Hours (no surprise there!), Orange Alert and Superman is Dead were stories that I fell in love with because of how unique and splendid they were. These stories took up very daily and mundane events and turned them into something so extraordinary and special that it was difficult not to admire and appreciate them. I would love to summarise every story, but with short stories, there's always the fear of letting everything out and I'm no Laura Gringer to give perfect and on-point summaries.

Overall, I would highly, highly recommend this collection because it's easy to read and yet managedsto leave a heavy impact on the readers because of the way in which every story is portrayed.

Review- Salvaged by Jay Crownover

Summary-

The New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Marked Men books continues her delightfully sexy Saints of Denver series.

Hudson Wheeler is a nice guy. Everyone knows it, including his fiancée who left him with a canceled wedding and a baby on the way. He’s tired of finishing last and is ready to start living in the moment with nights soaked in whiskey, fast cars, and even faster girls. He’s set to start living on the edge, but when he meets Poppy Cruz, her sad eyes in the most gorgeous face he’s ever seen hook him in right away. Wheeler can see Poppy’s pain and all he wants to do is take care of her and make her smile, whatever it takes.

Poppy can’t remember a time when she didn’t see strangers as the enemy. After a lifetime of being hurt from the men who swore to protect her, Poppy’s determined to keep herself safe by keeping everyone else at arm’s length. Wheeler’s sexy grin and rough hands from hours restoring classic cars shouldn’t captivate her, but every time she’s with him, she can’t help being pulled closer to him. Though she’s terrified to trust again, Poppy soon realizes it might hurt even more to shut Wheeler out—and the intense feelings pulsing through her are making it near impossible to resist him.

The only thing Poppy is sure of is that her heart is in need of some serious repair, and the more time she spends with Wheeler, the more she’s convinced he’s the only man with the tools to fix it.

Review-

Okay, first of all, can we just appreciate the gorgeousness that is this cover of Salvaged by Jay Crownover. It is beautiful and it is perfect for the book. Salvaged is the fourth and the final book in the Saints of Denver series. I have to admit that Poppy and Wheeler's book was the one I was most excited for. I was waiting and waiting for them to get the happy ending they deserved and that finally happens in Salvaged.

Let's start off with Hudson Wheeler, our hero. Wheeler is a nice guy. He isn't your typical bad boy with a chip on his shoulders. He has worked hard to get where he is today with his garage and car restoration business. All Wheeler has wanted is his life is to be loved by someone unconditionally and whole heartedly. But what he got was a cheating ex girlfriend who is now pregnant with his baby. I liked Wheeler. He was genuinely a good soul and though he knows his life is complicated, he wants to be with Poppy.

Poppy on the other hand has been abused by the men who were supposed to love her. Though she has recovered to a great extent now she still finds it hard to trust men. I really liked Poppy. She was a strong woman and even though she couldn't see it herself Wheeler could. But Poppy knows instinctively that she is safe with Wheeler and slowly but surely she begins trusting him.

I really enjoyed both Poppy and Wheeler as protagonists. They were both people who had faced so many hardships in life. At the core, they needed someone to treasure them for who they were. I loved Wheeler's patience with Poppy. Poppy may look timid but she definitely stood up when needed. The book is paced a bit slowly with Poppy and Wheeler being friends first then lovers. But it was the perfect progression for them.

I also loved how we got to see some of the previous couples from both the Marked Men series and the Saints of Denver series. I thought Poppy and Wheeler would be my favourite couple but now that I think of it, it's a toss up between Avett and Quaid and Dixie and Church. Jay Crownover's writing is amazing as usual and I can't wait to read more from her. Salvaged was a good read.
