EXCERPT

Halloween night, while everyone was dressing up and attending parties, Cy and I were in the basement, punching numbers. The Fitz was one of the oldest buildings on campus, and it struggled to keep itself comfortably heated in the winter and cooled in the summer. The basement was particularly miserable and felt like an icebox on very cold nights.

I sipped my water and pulled the sleeves of my sweater further down my hands.

Cy cleared his throat and, for the first time in weeks, spoke to me first. “I can talk to Dr. Zorba about a space heater.”

“He’ll never go for it,” I said, putting down my water and wiping my lips with the cuff of my sweater. “He wouldn’t risk a fire or a significant temperature change affecting the specimen.”

“It won’t affect the specimen. It came from space.”

“Exactly. Where it’s cold.”

“Who says the planet it originated from wasn’t able to retain higher temperatures?”

“Like Venus?”

“Exactly like Venus. I mean . . . I’m sure that it’s possible. I’ll look into a space heater.” I watched him expectantly. “What?”

“No Uranus jokes? I’m disappointed.”

“What do you mean?”

I chuckled. “Never mind.” My fingers began clicking against the keyboard again, and I was sure that I’d caught Cy staring at me from the corner of my eye. I glanced over at him. “What?”

“You’re much more attractive when you smile. And your laugh is lovely.”

“Uh . . . thank you.”

“You’re—”

“I’m welcome. It’s okay. I say thank you to you a lot, apparently.”

“I just want you to . . . I don’t know what I want.”

He stared at me for a few moments more then continued with his work. My face caught fire as the blood pooled under my cheeks. My fingers wouldn’t work after that, and I couldn’t concentrate on the numbers.

Cy stood up and left the room without a word. Right about the time I’d decided to get up and look for him, he returned, setting a Butterfinger on my desk.

“Trick or treat, right?” he said.

“Is that a Halloween joke? I mean that’s cool. I just didn’t know you had a sense of humor.”

“I’m surprised you’re here. There are costume parties all over campus.”

I shook my head. “I don’t really do parties. Just once in a while when I’m bored out of my mind, but I avoid Halloween parties at all costs.”

“Why is that?”

“Fake blood. Dead people. Slutty costumes. None of it screams fun to me.”

Cy grinned. “I suppose not. We still have an hour or so of work to do. Would you mind if I walk you home when we’re finished?”

“Why?”

My response took Cy off guard. He blinked a few times and then cleared his throat. “I think that maybe my insistence not to form attachments here was incorrect. We spend a lot of time together down here, and I’d like to get to know you better.”

“So that’s why you’ve been ignoring me? Because you know you’re leaving?”

He hesitated. “In part, yes.”

“What’s the other part?”

He squirmed in his chair. “You . . . intrigue me.”

I wanted to high-five myself. The few times we’d interacted before I thought he was being nice in spite of feeling an extreme loathing towards me. Instead, it was the opposite. To Cy, I was intriguing. I shrugged, trying to pretend I wasn’t irrationally pleased. “If you want.”

He smiled then continued with his work. Despite the difficulty I had focusing, I forced myself to get through the pages of data on my desk. My mind kept wandering off, questioning why I felt so drawn to him. Cy wasn’t my type. He was leaving. His lack of concert T’s told me that we likely had nothing in common. But even then, I had a strong feeling that there was a reason life had thrown us together.

INTERVIEW:

1.       Tell us a little bit about yourself

I was born in Patna, Bihar, the first son of Anil Sinha and Sudha Sinha. I spent my childhood in Patna where I completed my school from St. Karen’s Secondary School and Gyan Niketan. I went on to complete my B.Tech in Information Technology from Amity University, Noida in 2012. Of the few interesting hobbies I have and beyond all the weird stuffs I do to live my passion, wandering alone, though how weird it may seems, was the most alluring for me. Well of course, it kindled numerous ideas for my stories.

Though I will always be a homesick by heart, I live and work in Pune. If I am not working on my novel, you can find me reading, playing cricket, watching TV, or indulging in my unhealthy addiction to hanging out with friends.

2.      Tell us about your book, On a Drive With Life!!

On a Drive with Life, as a collection of short stories, was a concept that passed my mind some 4 years back. Slowly, but with dedication I have added into the collection. The collection includes love, tragedy, adventure, horror, separation, regret, desire, satisfaction, happiness and all the varied emotions. As the name suggests, the collection aims at taking the readers on a drive with their emotions, such that they share the emotions of the character.

The book “On A Drive With Life!!”is a collection of short stories. The main purpose for it was to put forth stories that portrayed the readers as the character. So that the readers feel being the part of stories, knowing that they also have been at those circumstances during various points in their lives. So as the name of the book goes, reading over will give them a breath taking experience where they will have their own flashbacks and rollout on a drive with life.

3.       What inspired you to write your book?

It has been a long and wandering journey of over half a decade. Writing blogs, articles, stories and then “On A Drive With life!!” was never going to be easy. I was fortunate enough to find help and support from my father Anil Sinha, the Editor of Times Of India Mr. Rajkumar, My teachers like Mr. Parveen Sharma and friends Vidya Nair, Rohan Mundle, Surabhi Dangi, Himani and the list goes on.

I have been involved in writing this book for quite a sometime. The inspiration was the idea to not imagine ourselves as a character of the book. But to feel being there and read it as it was aimed to be written; the story of you!

4.       Are any of the characters in your book inspired by someone you know or are they complete results of your imagination?

A writer can never portray a story or depict an emotion if he cannot feel it. While going through the book, the reader will realize that the stories convey our day to day lives. Characters share a bond with them and that their emotions are presented in a unique way. As said before this is a story of all of us which will take you to flashbacks and you will feel being on a drive with life!

5.       What kind of research went into writing your book?

The stories aim at portraying the emotions, circumstances and lives of the reader that he may have underwent at various points in his life. And at the same time I had to convey through the shocking endings that whatever decisions he took in his life was the requirement of the moment. So he must be proud that wherever he may be, he is at a better place. And for that I had to recall, listen and talk to people, know their experiences and their regrets and then go on with the arduous task of palpating those emotions. It was not an easy task to consolidate all those into one and at the same time stick to the message of the stories. But I hope I will be able to connect with the readers.

6.       Tell us about the whole publishing process and how it went.

Publishing a book is as challenging as writing it. But again there is no satisfaction of achievement until you struggled for it. The book was praised and admired at various publishing houses, but either their slots were booked or they were not interested in moving on with this new idea. Indeed it is always immature to have a grudge for that, it’s their opinion and surely I have my own. I had sent the copy of it to many houses and fortunately it got selected by my publisher. And it is from here where all the excitement begun. From deciding the cover pic, to the font, to the pages, to the releasing of the book by His Excellency Padamshree Governor Dr. D.Y Patil and then becoming an instant hit among the readers. And I must say the process as a whole was both challenging and exciting.

7.       Who are some of your favorite authors and what are some of your favorite books?

Dan Brown, J.K Rowling, Sidney Sheldon are some of the authors who tops my list. And I love all of their books.

8.       If you could read only one book for the rest of your life, what book would you pick and why?

I will definitely choose anyone from Dan Brown’s. I will prefer unraveling the codes and mysteries to keep myself engrossed whenever I read.

Review- He's So Fine by Jill Shlavis

Summary-

For Olivia Bentley, Lucky Harbor is more than the town where she runs her new vintage shop. It's the place where folks are friendly to strangers-and nobody knows her real name. Olivia does a good job of keeping her past buried, not getting too cozy with anyone . . . until she sees a man drowning. Suddenly she's rushing into the surf, getting up close and personal with the hottest guy she's ever laid hands on.

Charter boat captain Cole Donovan has no problem with a gorgeous woman throwing her arms around his neck in an effort to "save" him. In fact, he'd like to spend a lot more time skin-to-skin with Olivia. He's just not expecting that real trouble is about to come her way. Will it bring her deeper into Cole's heart, or will it be the end of Olivia's days in little Lucky Harbor?

Review-

He's So Fine is the eleventh book in Jill Shlavis' Lucky Harbor series. I have to say that in this last trilogy, I was the most excited about Cole's book. He had me excited and intrigued since we met him in It's in His Kiss. I am so pleased to say that I thoroughly enjoyed He's So Fine. Cole is definitely one of my favorites in the lot.

Olivia runs her vintage shop in the town of Lucky Harbor. Olivia has had a bad past which she is hiding. She wants to be known for who she is now, not who she was in the past. I really liked Olivia. She pretended to have a hard exterior but underneath she was a big softie. I liked how we got to see all her vulnerabilities and how she was when she was with Cole.

Cole runs a boat business with his friends Sam and Tanner. Cole is the guy who can fix anything and everything. He sees the world in black and white. I adored Cole. He was loyal and protective over his friends and family. When he meets Olivia all he wants to do is get to know her better. I really liked how determined Cole was.

Olivia and Cole had amazing chemistry. Since their hilarious meeting on the first page I loved how they were together. Despite both of them having issues to overcome I liked how they always ended up with each other in difficult times. They shared a beautiful intimacy and it was lovely watching them fall for each other.

Jill Shalvis, as always writes amazingly well. I flew through He's So Fine in one sitting. I also loved seeing all the other residents of Lucky Harbor and am really looking forward to Tanner's story to end the series. I really enjoyed He's So Fine.

*Note: A copy of this book was provided by the author/publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. We thank them.

EXCERPT

Coming into her office to ask if everything was ready, Tahir stilled as his gaze found the woman with her neck arched back in abandon in the chair. What the...his jaw went slack focusing on the darting tip of a tongue moistening soft pink flesh and the expression of pure sensual enjoyment on her face.
This wasn’t his usually staid and prim PA. Muscles clenched low in his body witnessing the sensuous slide of that tongue tip. Like he’d wandered into the live filming of some erotic edgy scene. It only needed her hair unconfined and the prim buttons on her top loosened for the picture of sexy siren to be complete. With her head thrown back like that and her chest thrust forward, full curves straining the buttons, she wasn’t less than a siren now. His gaze moved back to the promise of her lush parted mouth and it required no imagination to picture the feel of it beneath his, to picture capturing that errant tip... He inhaled. Blood rushed through his body at double the speed, surging strategically southward.
That kiss he’d shared with Samara had been a blindingly white ray of light piercing the darkness he’d been sunk in that day. Something had reached into him and pulled him out of the abyss. He’d been jolted to discover his cool PA was capable of such a passionate response. But there was more. Something he couldn’t name nor wanted to. He just wanted to put it behind a door and lock it. He didn’t want to gaze into the widened eyes as he had that evening and see the dawning awareness of desire, her body going hot at his touch.
Damn. Shouldn’t he have forgotten these things? Maybe it had been his mind playing tricks on him.
He’d been all set to put her straight. He didn’t want the calm of his workplace disrupted by anything and it wasn’t with pleasure that he’d looked forward to the talk the next day. She’d jumped in assuring him she was eager to put it behind her. Exactly what he should have been happy to hear. His work environment restored to order.
Should have been.
But wasn’t...

Samara became conscious of something different in her surroundings and sat up, guilt flooding her skin with warmth as she saw Tahir looking at her from his six foot vantage point, narrowed brown gaze focusing on her face. The dark brows lifted sardonically, his well shaped mouth with that velvet sheen it had, curving oh so slightly.
‘I – I was just...’
She stopped, unable to explain and unable to decipher why she felt the temperature of the room increase till a wave of heat bounced around her body.
He stood feet apart, every inch the inflexible, demanding boss man that he was. He was also jaw dropping handsome, looking like a honed and toned version of a male deo model. Forget the chocó, I could settle for a bite of that anytime. That well shaped mouth, with a fuller sensual lower lip, dark eyes, the colour of ground coffee, thickly lashed. Those spikes, he gelled his hair into as a concession to trend. No wonder women chased him any and every chance they got.
‘I don’t pay you to indulge your time fantasizing in my office.’ He ground out, a curt edge to his deep voice, his eyes still narrowed on her face.
She almost did a double take, wondering if he’d heard her thoughts but he was referring to her mooning pose in the chair.
‘I wasn’t!’ Indignation made her voice rise a notch more than its usual even tenor.
‘Whatever.’ He dismissed with a flick of his fingers. ‘Is everything ready for the meeting with the Guptas?’
‘Of course.’
‘Then let’s go. There’s a land deal to be made.’
He went back inside and took his coat from the back of his chair to shrug into it. Against her will she followed the movement, the stretch and ripple of muscles under the powder blue of his shirt. Despite the desk job, he managed to keep himself athlete fit, partly by playing football. She knew he had a game once or twice a week. Maybe he visited the gym at other times. God knew when he had the leisure. He was at office sometimes before her and she mostly came in at eight.
Didn’t his lady friends mind?
The errant thought rolled through her mind and molten shame poured into her, heating her cheeks. Conscious of his regard again fixing on her, she hurried off to instruct the helper to deliver things to the car.
She came back to find him by her desk.
‘Well?’ A dark eyebrow lifted to question her hesitant pose. He was standing too close and she had to get her bag from the desk. She waited for him to give her space as he did usually but he wouldn’t move. How had he got to be so aggressive? Almost as though he wanted to be in her way. Biting her lip she reached across to pick up her oversize bag.
They didn’t touch so why was her pulse going wild? Face it, Samara. You’re a sucker for the guy. Another inner voice argued. I work for the man, damn it!
‘Ready to move? Has your mind got back to work or are you still dreaming of your lover?’
She could only stare at him for the unexpectedly snide tone of the comment. ‘What do you mean by that?’
He shrugged, ‘What else am I supposed to think? You looked like you were reliving some secret sexual fantasy.’
Her breath caught at his brashness. Tahir, so distant and formal, was saying this? ‘How can you say that?’
She’d said the words in shock but he chose to interpret differently, ‘It was pretty obvious from your expression. Lips parted. Eyes half closed. Like a woman thinking of pleasure and only that.’
Heat shot along her veins at his description. At the tone. Lazily rolling around illicit words.
‘You would know of course, what a woman thinking of ‘pleasure and only that’ looks like?’ She jibed.
 ‘Of course.’
Sexy and confident, his voice was filled with sensual mockery. Something that prickled across her nerves like thorny cactus.
‘Are you boasting about your sexual prowess?’
‘Are you challenging it?’
Where had this sort of talk come from, sidling into their usual mundane queries about forms and research portfolios? A challenge was in his eyes. Hooded. Watchful. Gleaming like caramelized sugar. Something dangerous and funky that she had never seen and wasn’t quite sure she wanted to but that hooked her anyway.

Excerpt:
January 31st, 8:15am—Homeroom
I’m one of the unluckiest people I know. I’m the girl who gets a pimple on picture day or starts her period at a pool party with cute boys. Nothing goes my way, and I’ve always been okay with that. So when I posted videos of me singing Carrie Underwood cover songs on YouTube, I didn’t think my luck would suddenly change.
I’m just so embarrassed! They emailed me for two weeks, but I kept ignoring them. The emails sounded so suspicious—was I really supposed to believe I was being offered a recording contract through email? I wasn’t going to fall for another email con artist. My sister still makes fun of me for believing that the Prince of Aruba was having financial problems. Finally, they asked to talk to my mom and proved they were actually the head honchos of Shell Shocked Studios through a video chat session. Before I knew it, Mom bought two plane tickets to Los Angeles. I’ve never left Iowa before, and now she’s talking about moving to LA. I could just die. I really could.

The worst part is the fact that I can’t really tell anyone about this. I mean, I could, but I know the kids at school will make fun of me, instead of congratulating me. None of them would believe that Holly Hart, that girl who always gets in trouble for writing in her journal during class, would get a record deal. I’m not even in choir. Whoops, Mrs. Holland is looking my way.
