Review- Kiro's Emily by Abbi Glines

Summary-

The year is 1992, and no one on the rock music scene is hotter than Kiro Manning, the lead singer of Slacker Demon. With a multi-platinum record, total ownership of the Billboard charts, sold-out concerts, and sinful amounts of money, Kiro can have anything—and anyone—he wants.

So when a dark-haired, conservative beauty rebuffs him at a concert after-party, his first thought is, “Who the hell does she think she is?” His second thought: “How do I make her mine?” Kiro has always loved a good challenge, but not every girl wants to get involved with a rock god. Especially this girl.

He let her go that night, but he never forgot her. And when they met again, he vowed not to give up again so easily.

As the world worshipped Kiro, he came to worship the girl, who became everything he never knew he needed. The only girl he would ever love. His Emily.

Review-

Abbi Glines' books always seem to be comfort reads for me. They are easy to read and most of the time take my mind of things with the cheesy romance. So when Kiro's Emily came out I got right to it. While I do think Kiro's Emily was a fairly good novella it was not as good as some other Abbi Glines books.

Kiro is the lead singer of the famous band Slacker Demon. He is rich and spoiled  and completely out of control. I really hadn't liked Kiro when we'd met him in all the previous books but here we get to see him in his true rock star form. Kiro has everything he wants in life fame, women and money but then he meets Emily and something in him changes.

I really liked Emily. She was a sweet and simple girl and had no intention of catching the fancy of Kiro Manning. Like most Abbi Glines heroines she was innocent and pure so that the hero is completely smitten at first sight. And that is exactly what happens with Kiro and Emily. I liked the chemistry Kiro and Emily shared and it was nice to see a more human side to Kiro.

Kiro's Emily has a bittersweet ending which was a little sad to read. But things are the way they are. There were just issues I had with Kiro's behavior which at times made me feel like I was reading about two different people. One from the previous books and one in Kiro's Emily. Kiro's Emily was a quick and light read.

TEASERS:

“Me, too. I’m … Thomas, by the way,” he said softly. He rolled over and relaxed beside me, his head propped by his hand. Instead of getting dressed, he looked as if he were ready for conversation.
I pressed my lips together. “I’m,” Do it. Do it or you’ll just be kicking yourself later. “…emotionally unavailable.”

    ***
“I live in Midtown,” I said, wondering if I would see my neighbor again.
She grinned. “Me, too. A lot of us do. We can drown your sorrows together.”

“I don’t have sorrows. Just memories. They’ll go away on their own.”
***
He narrowed his eyes. “Are you insubordinate, Agent Lindy? Is that why you were sent here, to be under my command?”
“You requested me, remember?”
“I didn’t request you. I requested the best language expert we had.”
“That would be me, sir.”

Review- The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid

Goodreads Summary:

At a cafe table in Lahore, a bearded Pakistani man converses with an uneasy American stranger. As dusk deepens to night, he begins the tale that has brought them to this fateful encounter . . .

Changez is living an immigrant's dream of America. At the top of his class at Princeton, he is snapped up by the elite valuation firm of Underwood Samson. He thrives on the energy of New York, and his budding romance with elegant, beautiful Erica promises entry into Manhattan society at the same exalted level once occupied by his own family back in Lahore.

But in the wake of september 11, Changez finds his position in his adopted city suddenly overturned, and his budding relationship with Erica eclipsed by the reawakened ghosts of her past. And Changez's own identity is in seismic shift as well, unearthing allegiances more fundamental than money, power, and maybe even love.

REVIEW:

I had been looking forward to reading The Reluctant Fundamentalist since a very long time now. The book had been sitting on my shelf since God knows how long, when I finally decided to pick it up and read it. I have always loved reading stories that are set on the backdrop of the 9/11 attacks on America. It is a very sensitive issue and everyone's opinion on it depends on on where they live but some way or the other, the entire world was affected by it, which is why the theme always works, whether in books or movies. The Reluctant Fundamentalist was no exception. It was just as good as any other book I've read based on the most politically challenging incident of our times.

Before telling you what The Reluctant Fundamentalist is, let me tell you what it is not. It is not a political outburst, it is not a debate, it is not a retelling of the attacks, nor is it a journey of the consequences of the event. The book is a simple second person point of view narration, where the protagonist Changez, sitting in a comfortable and quaint café in Lahore, recounts to an American man about whom we know nothing, his journey as a respectful Pakistani boy coming from a prestigious yet financially slightly unstable family who goes to become a hard working student at Princeton University, a diligent worker at Underwood Samson, a sincere and reverential friend and lover, but throughout his journey, what strikes the reader the most is that Changez remains, from the first page to the last, a human being who is very good at heart.

When I picked up The Reluctant Fundamentalist, I honestly had no idea what I was getting into. After reading the first chapter itself, I knew that the story would move me tremendously. While not tremendously, the story still moved me. I was slightly disappointed by difference in the range of emotion that I wanted to feel and the one I actually ended up feeling. Because it is a very simple narration, I found myself connecting very easily with the protagonist Cahngez, whose voice was very crisp, smooth, honest and sincere. His transition from a local boy to an international man and how he wanted to identify himself as a New Yorker but knew in his heart that he would always be Pakistani, was simply astounding. Author Mohsin Hamid has a writing that flows like a large and generous river running through the magnificent country that is Pakistan. His book is very good. I only wish it were longer.

Stripped of her illusions, Zoella creates her own twist in the fairy tale, beating him at his own game.

by

Zoella’s been in love with Fardeen, her best friend’s gorgeous older brother, since she was ten, but he’s always seen her as a ‘good girl’—not his type—and he can barely remember her name. Besides, he’s engaged to a gorgeous leggy socialite, someone from the same rarefied social strata as the imposing Malik family.

Zoella has no chance with him.

Until a brutal accident leaves Fardeen scarred and disfigured, that is. Suddenly bereft of a fiancee, Fardeen is bitterly caustic, a shell of the man he used to be, a beast that has broken out of the fairy tale world he once lived in. And a twist of fate lands him his very own princess—Zoella.

The beast, however, is a far cry from the Fardeen of her dreams. Stripped of her illusions, Zoella creates her own twist in the fairy tale, beating him at his own game.

Review- The Distance Between Us by Kasie West

Summary-

Seventeen-year-old Caymen Meyers studies the rich like her own personal science experiment, and after years of observation she’s pretty sure they’re only good for one thing—spending money on useless stuff, like the porcelain dolls in her mother’s shop.

So when Xander Spence walks into the store to pick up a doll for his grandmother, it only takes one glance for Caymen to figure out he’s oozing rich. Despite his charming ways and that he’s one of the first people who actually gets her, she’s smart enough to know his interest won’t last. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned from her mother’s warnings, it’s that the rich have a short attention span. But Xander keeps coming around, despite her best efforts to scare him off. And much to her dismay, she's beginning to enjoy his company.

She knows her mom can’t find out—she wouldn’t approve. She’d much rather Caymen hang out with the local rocker who hasn’t been raised by money. But just when Xander’s attention and loyalty are about to convince Caymen that being rich isn’t a character flaw, she finds out that money is a much bigger part of their relationship than she’d ever realized. And that Xander’s not the only one she should’ve been worried about.

Review-

I had been hearing such awesome things about Kasie West since a long time so I just had to try out her books. The Distance Between Us looked like a really cute read and that is why when I was in the mood for it I got to it. The book was much better than I thought it would be. A quick light read with heart which makes you happy.

Caymen works at a doll shop which her mother owns. I really liked Caymen since the moment we met her. She had this dry sense of humor which only a few got and all her sarcastic remarks kept me grinning while reading. Caymen has her own issues with her father and especially with "rich" people because of her past but when she meets Xander she can't help but be attracted to her.

I really liked Xander too but not as much as Caymen herself. Xander is richer than God but he is charming and strangely he understands Caymen. I liked Xander's determination where Caymen was concerned. He didn't give up on her and kept pursuing her even when the odds were stacked against them.

Caymen and Xander were really cute together. Cuteness is the ongoing theme in Distance Between Us. The book is completely clean but I still enjoyed the conversations Caymen and Xander shared. I also liked the relationship Caymen shared with her friends and her mother.

The only thing that bothered me in The Distance Between Us was the twist in the end which I felt made the book lose its point. The whole poor girl rich boy thing the book had going was cliche but still fresh through Kasie West's eyes. I loved the writing and I am very sure that I'm going to look into reading more books by her.

Top Ten Tuesday is a bookish meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week's topic is:

sarika's top ten book boyfriends

So, there are many guys from many books that I absolutely love. For example,  in terms of contemporaries, I love Rush Finlay and Cage York from Abbi Glines' Too Far and Sea Breeze series respectively, Gray from First Comes Love by Katie Kacvinsky and Travis from Something Like Normal by Trish Doller. Then there are the younger ones like Ethan Lawson Wate from the Caster Chronicles series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, Sam Roth from The Wolves of Mercy Falls series by Maggie Stiefvater and Danny from Daisy Whitney's When You Were Here. Then there are the bad boys like Warner from Tahereh Mafi's Shatter Me series and Liam from Heidi McLaughlin's Beaumont series.

But. But, but, but... There is one book boyfriend whom I love so so so much that it was actually Janhvi who gave me the idea of presenting the following to you; so here we go. My edit of the following picture explains all you need to know.
