Review- Hooked by Liz Fichera

Summary-

When Native American Fredricka ‘Fred’ Oday is invited to become the only girl on the school’s golf team, she can’t say no. This is an opportunity to shine, win a scholarship and go to university, something no one in her family has done.

But Fred’s presence on the team isn’t exactly welcome — especially not to rich golden boy Ryan Berenger, whose best friend was kicked off the team to make a spot for Fred.

But there’s no denying that things are happening between the girl with the killer swing and the boy with the killer smile...

GET HOOKED ON A GIRL NAMED FRED.

Review-

Hooked is a book which I really wanted to like. With its gorgeous cover and to the point summary it seemed to be the perfect young adult read. Even though it kinda reminded me of Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally, it seemed to look really good. I badly wanted to see how Ryan and Fred would clash and then end up falling for each other. Sadly it did not live up to my expectations. It turned out to be just an okay read.

Fred, our heroine whose actual name is Fredricka Oday was a lovely girl. She was shy and sweet yet determined. Golf, which had started out as an escape for her from her dreaded home life soon turned to be her passion where she could just be herself. She was focused on her game. And she was really good at it. That is why she gets picked to be on the boys golf team. Another thing I really liked about her was that she wasn't whiny or a drama queen. She worked with what she got.

Then we have Ryan. Him I really didn't like. He was spineless. He should have stood up for himself and for Fred to his friends Seth and Gwynth, but he didn't. He had to apologize for his actions, or lack thereof one too many times for me to actually like him. He does kinda redeem himself towards the end of the book but then that too didn't make me like him that much. He could have been a much better person towards Fred if he's just thought about it.

The cover though gorgeous is misleading because there is not a single steamy scene in the book. There is very little romance actually and I would have loved to see more of a development in Fred and Ryan's relationship. We get very little real time between the two of them. The remainder of the book goes in misunderstandings and jealousies. The book definitely has enough of angst and drama to keep you occupied.

Hooked goes between Ryan and Fred's point of view. I liked Fred's way of thinking. I had no knowledge of Native Americans so I enjoyed learning about their culture and ways. That was what made the book different and unique. It deals with issues like racism and it was handled well. If not for some of the characters I would have enjoyed this book loads more. Hooked was an okay young adult book. It doesn't have any major flaws as such but it just doesn't grab you in.

  1. I read this one too and I definitely agree with you, the cover makes you think that this book is full of romance but,it was not what I was looking for.

  2. I initially liked Ryan but as I read on it annoyed me that he couldn't even think for himself. While an okay story, I agree that Hooked wasn't exactly memorable. If it weren't for the golf, I don't think I would have liked this novel in the slightest.

  3. That's one of the worst feelings..when you expect the book to be great and you hear amazing this about it and then at the end it turns to be just okay. I have seen this book around but haven't read any review for it. Well I might as well skip this one! :)

  4. I got a copy of this book from NetGalley and at first I was excited to read it. But now I've read so many disappointed reviews that I'm kind of dreading having to read this. :/
