HOLD ME TIGHT Synopsis:

He loves me. He loves me not.

Ivy's heart shatters upon hearing Eric's crushing ultimatum. Despite how much she cares for him, she won't give in to his demands. She has no choice but to leave, even if it's the hardest thing she's ever had to do.

She loves me. She loves me not.

When Ivy walks out, Eric can't help feeling betrayed. Unwilling to put her at risk, he values her safety above all else. By refusing to compromise, he's blindsided when she moves in with a man who's already stolen so much from him.

I love you. You love me not.

Lauren sees Eric and Ivy's split as an opportunity to end their relationship once and for all. When Ivy places herself at the mercy of Eric's rival, Lauren plots to destroy the fragile tie binding them together, even if she endangers Ivy's life in the process.

Excerpt:

But there’s something I have to do before this goes any further.

Slowly, I draw my head away from her embrace, finding the courage to finally meet her eyes. Her hair hasn’t been combed and her face is all tear-stained, but she has never looked more beautiful.

She stands, bracing herself against me. Her breath hitches when I gently start unbuttoning her shirt, but her eyes never leave my face. I stop partway up, raising the bottom half of her cami up and over her baby bump. Dropping down, I run my hands across her stomach, feeling her shiver against my fingertips. Looking up at her, I place my lips on her bellybutton, kissing the child that’s growing within her, the miracle we created.

“I will never ask you to choose again,” I say solemnly, my voice nothing but a whisper.

Ivy starts to cry in earnest, placing her hands atop mine.

“You are my heart now. Whatever happens to you happens to me.” I kiss each one of her knuckles as she sighs deeply, like she’s been longing with all her soul to hear me say these words. “I know I’m not as brave as you are, but I promise to try harder.”

“Eric, stop. You’re the bravest man I know,” she proclaims with a tender fierceness, tears shining in her eyes.

“I’m just so afraid of losing you,” I mutter, breaking down.

“Oh, Eric,” she whimpers, sobbing right along with me. “I know, baby... I know.”

I lean back against the wall, guiding her onto my lap. We don’t say anything more. We just sit there and hold each other, savoring the moment.

EXCERPT:

“What kind of books do you want to write?” Ford asked, turning his attention back to his plate.
The question brought her back to reality. “Romance.”
“Ah, fairytales.”
At her narrowed eyes, he said, “I’m not judging. All writers, myself included, create whole worlds to give people a reprieve from their real lives. That’s what I do, too.”
Andi laughed but there was no joy in the sound. It was exactly how she felt about the kind of books she wanted to write and something Peter never understood.
Interestingly, Ford’s words meant he didn’t believe in real love—that he considered the beautifully written romantic plotlines in his own books ‘fairytales’. “I don’t buy it. You can’t write books like yours and not believe in love, at least to some extent.”
Ford’s mouth tightened. He ran a hand through his hair. “Why?”
“Because there’s hope in love.” She met his gaze. “And a world without hope is a sad one. If you truly feel what you say, you want to leave people with the feeling that good exists and that love, no matter how impossible, is possible. If love is such a lie, I can’t see you selling it like you do.”
Ford’s eyes flashed. “I believe people leave you when you need them most in life. I believe real love is something people tell themselves exists because it makes the world a better place to live in. When love fails, and it always does, people make excuses. He wasn’t the one. She was too critical, bossy, fat…whatever.”
Andi frowned. “So why write romance into your books at all? If you don’t buy into the notion it’s real?”
Ford smiled but his eyes softened, something sad lingering in his gaze. “Because there’s nothing wrong with giving false hope. Even if true love is a lie, it makes life easier to swallow. And that’s what’s important—finding a way to get through the rough parts. Love is the Achilles heel of man. It’s something we can’t help pursuing even if it ends in heartache, even if it is an endless pursuit of happiness. Shakespeare, Jane Austen—they got it.”
Andi sat in silence. The sadness in his eyes shot clear through her heart like an arrow, and her mind raced through his books, trying to piece together what she was missing, what piece of heartbreak had been embedded between the pages that explained the way he felt now.
“You think I’m wrong?” he asked, breaking through her thoughts.
She wanted to argue with him, to come up with a line that would disprove everything he had just said about love, but she had none, so she said what she felt instead. “I think a world without true love is a world without hope, one I don’t want to be a part of. So, I choose to believe, whether it’s real or not.”
She saw it. The flash in his eyes, a glimmer of something unexplained as his molten gaze met hers, pinning her to her seat. She caught her breath, unable to look away, the blood humming in her veins. In that moment, nothing and no one else existed. It was just him and her and the intimate conversation between them.
He placed his hand over hers and leaned into the table. “Andi?” he whispered.
Heart knocking against her ribs, her eyes flickered to his mouth and the hard contours of his jaw. He had shared so much of himself with her. This broken, brilliant man. Maybe all he needed was a little hope?
He reached out, cupping the side of her face. She’d never wanted anything as much as she wanted to kiss him in that moment. The warmth of his palm burned through her skin, and the feel of him exploded all thought, scattering it to the far corners of her mind. She curled her fingers around his and leaned closer. She could hear the soft sound of his breathing.
All she had to do was close her eyes. Move just a bit closer…

TEASERS:

“Because there’s hope in love.” She met his gaze. “And a world without hope is a sad one. If you truly feel what you say, you want to leave people with the feeling that good exists and that love, no matter how impossible, is possible. If love is such a lie, I can’t see you selling it like you do.
* * *
Even if true love is a lie, it makes life easier to swallow. And that’s what’s important—finding a way to get through the rough parts.
* * *
He exhaled, breath caressing her skin. “How do you do it?” he asked.
She swallowed, a razor blade in her throat while his eyes searched hers. “Do what?”
His face became distorted and her vision blurred until she wondered if this all wasn't just a dream.
“Get under my skin,” he whispered.
* * *
Never before had she felt this. As if she was soaring and falling at the same time. As if she was witnessing something exotic and rare. As if she could die right now and not care, as long as it was in his arms.

Wrestling to keep her true identity and their sordid past under wraps, Olivia’s greatest obstacle is Caleb’s wicked, new girlfriend; Leah Smith. It is a race to the finish as these two vipers engage in a vicious tug of war to possess a man who no longer remembers them. But, soon enough Olivia must face the consequences of her lies, and in the process discover that sometimes love falls short of redemption.

REVIEW:

Janhvi told me about the Love Me With Lies series over coffee one day. That girl knows what books I will like practically better than I know myself. All she had to say was 'this is messed up' and I was up to buddy read it with my most favourite buddy reader. It's no surprise that Janhvi is a brilliant girl, but I'm sorry to say dude, this was way too messed up than you gave it credit for.

The Opportunist fucked my mind. Majorly.

I don't even know how to review this book. Notice I took up the first part to give you a brief about how I got into the book because I either don't have much to say or I have a hell lot to say. And I can't pick between the two so I'll just tell you in two simple words how this book is- frighteningly obsessive.
I am really not going to say anything about the story. There was a flow between the past and the present which both made everything easy and difficult to understand.

Have you ever had the feeling where you read or see something you wish you hadn't read or seen? If you haven't, then remember that The Opportunist has many such scenes. It'll make you wish you'd just skipped that one line or that one word.

Man, my mind is overdriven after reading about so much of obsession, compulsion, manipulation and treachery. The Opportunist shows the excess level of love where it gets obsessive and possessive to such an extent that it tends to turn into masochism.

There are various ways to interpret the almost electrifying characters and the complex ways in which they want to prove their love. For me, it really was very masochistic where one person only wanted to see their lover go through pain and they loved seeing it. And not in a sexual way at all. It was all about dishonesty, disloyalty, narcissism, mind games and manipulation. It's one big, complicated psychological jumble.

Well, if you've read my review until here, you might think that I have some serious issues with the book and that I didn't like it. It was an absolutely frightening read- not in a scary way but more in a creepy way- that literary gave me goosebumps more times than once. But it was a thrilling read that has left my mind fucked up beyond recognition. Honestly, I don't know if I love it or hate it. But I sure as hell loved reading it, so that's a plus. Hopefully.

Author Interview + Giveaway- Heart, Mind and Wallet by Ankur Ashta

Hey guys!
Today we have with us Ankur Ashta who is the author of Heart, Mind and Wallet. The book looks really interesting so please go ahead and read the interview. There is also a super cool giveaway at the end. :)

Summary-

Consumer insight, though a potent possession, is not a magical agent that transpires from years of scrutiny and soul-searching. All it takes is a basic understanding of what enhances the pleasure for human beings and what reduces their pain. We all have, for example, used the ATM to withdraw cash, sometime or the other. Consider a situation where a person visiting the ATM doesn't have to bother to key-in the amount he needs; the ATM recognizes him and hands him the money basis his identified needs. "Heart, Mind & Wallet" aims to highlight the handiness of insights, while - at the same time - capturing their potential, bringing into focus, in the context, how certain thought-leaders have used them to create winning stories.Consider a company leveraging expiry date for pillows to increase the sales of the product by more than 300%. Also, consider a company bridging the gap between ice-cream parlours and consumers and re-writing the way, ice-cream is consumed in India. This well-researched book throws light on some innate human factors, which - while being ridiculously entertaining - are also capable of defining success or failure of a brand. The book has been written in a fairly easy to understand language and, explains everything with loads of exciting stories and marketing examples (largely in Indian context).

AUTHOR:

INTERVIEW:

1. Tell us a little bit about your book, Heart, Mind & Wallet.

Heart, Mind and Wallet is a book about human behaviour and how we, human beings, interact with brands and marketing. It is about motivational forces behind our actions, thoughts and behaviour. It also talks about how different advertisers/companies have leveraged these motivational forces to script envious success stories. The book also talks about interesting human idiosyncrasies that we all indulge in, yet don’t know unless someone tells us.

2. What inspired you to write Heart, Mind & Wallet?

I have always been a keen observer of human behaviour. My job and the fact that I like reading led me to work on something, which talks about human behaviour and how it follows certain patterns and how these patterns can be used to make interesting product innovations/advertising campaigns.

3. What made you so interested in the Indian market and its consumers?

India is a very peculiar market and it needs to be treated differently from the rest of the world. There are companies which have made peace with this fact and are benefitting out of it. For example, Audi – for India- makes different horns than what it makes globally. This is because the horns that it makes globally will not work beyond two weeks, given the vigorous use Indians put horns to. These kinds of examples are my inspiration to deep dive into the Indian mindset.

4. Why do you think readers should pick up your book?

For a simple reason: there aren’t too many books on the topic which explain the subject without getting esoteric. In fact, I have already started getting feedback on the book and people are appreciating that it is such an easy book to read. Also, the book aims to highlight, to the ‘non-marketing’ background people, on why they should take interest in marketing and consumer insights. Your interest in understanding India is also a good enough reason for you to pick this book.

5. Which authors do you look up to for their writing style?

I like the way Malcom Gladwell writes. I am a huge fan of Dan Ariely and Sheena Iyengar.

6. What advice would you like to give for aspiring authors?

Stay focused and persistent, and read a lot. Get back to your book at least four times in a week. Also, you shouldn’t read your own thing too often and after long gaps. Since you have written it, it can’t intrigue you as much as it would intrigue someone who reads it for the first time. This lack of intrigue can affect confidence in your content.

7. What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I am a practicing marketer; so the work keeps me occupied. Other than work and writing, I like to take out time for reading and observing human behaviour. I like to try my hand at cooking as well, sometimes.

8. Which is the one book you could read for the rest of your life?

I would pick two:
Cuckold by Kiran Nagarkar and Fountainhead by Ayn Rand.

9. What can we expect next from you?

I am working on a couple of things right now. One is related to human behaviour. The other one is about common mistakes we make in our usage of English, the language

10. What makes Heart, Mind & Wallet different from all the other books in the market?

Its simplicity, lot of Indian examples and the fact it has been written with the consumer at the centre. So, it is to enhance the learning of the consumer and why he/she should take interest in marketing and consumer insights. The topic might appear boring to a lot of people. The book aims to make it interesting for the reader.

Thank you so much Ankur!

GIVEAWAY:

Ankur has generously offered to give away TWO copies of Heart, Mind and Wallet to two lucky Indian readers.
May the odds be ever is your favor! :)

Review- Sweet Revenge by Rebecca Zanetti

Summary-

The One Man She Can't Have

Matt Dean was born to fight…and kill. A member of a secret black-ops military unit, he and his brothers were genetically engineered by the government to be the perfect soldiers with an expiration date. Now, with time running out, he's gone rogue in a relentless quest for the one person who can save them. His mission leads him to Charmed, Idaho…and to a beautiful woman with eyes like emeralds and a body made for pleasure.

The One Woman He Can't Resist

Laney Jacobs knows the mysterious, handsome stranger is trouble from the moment he walks into her bar, looking for a job. She's spent years running from her own past—the last thing she needs is a romantic entanglement. But Matt's strong arms offer her protection, and his gentle touch promises passion unlike anything she's ever known. As lethal forces surround them, revealing explosive secrets about Matt's past and putting everything—and everyone—he holds dear in danger, can he save them all before time runs out?

Review-

Sweet Revenge is the second book in Rebecca Zanetti's Sins Brothers series. I had totally loved the first book which was Forgotten Sins so I had high expectations of Sweet Revenge. I am so happy to say that Sweet Revenge was just as good if not better than Forgotten Sins. And by just as good I mean amazing, of course.

Matt is the oldest brother. He has always been the protector, training his brothers hard so that they could escape the evil commander. But now time is running out and he needs to find the doctor to remove his chip. I loved Matt. It is extremely easy to love these brothers actually. Matt was such a mix of strength and vulnerability. Matt has a horrid past but his protectiveness over his brothers and Laney made him swoony.

Laney is the owner of a bar in the small town of Charmed. When Matt comes looking for a job in her bar she knows the mysterious guy is trouble but she keeps him anyway. I loved Laney. She had her own secrets but she was very likeable and easy to relate to. Rebecca Zanetti writes really nice female protagonists, like not the irritating dumb ones. They're smart and capable and love the hero just right.

Matt and Laney start off as temporary but they both know what they feel for each other could never be temporary. They have an amazing chemistry and they compliment each other really well. With the hot romance we also have a serial killer on the loose. This made for a thoroughly complex and intriguing plot.

Some questions are answered but even more questions pop up. I loved getting glimpses of Shane and Josie. I am REALLY curious to see Nate's story because he has so much history. I love how engaging Rebecca Zanetti's stories are. I am so glad that I found this series.

Waiting on Wednesday #84

*NOTE: Hi guys! I hope you've all been doing well and reading lots of books.
Before I start the Waiting on Wednesday post scheduled for today, I have an apology to make to you and most importantly to Janhvi.

Yesterday, I was so caught up in my studies and working on my presentation for today (which went pretty well) that I forgot to post a Top Ten Tuesday. I feel horrible about it and thought of compiling the Tuesday and Wednesday posts but it doesn't really make any sense to post Top Ten Tuesday on Wednesday.

Anyway, I'm sorry and now that that's done, let's get on to the book I'm waiting for and let's hope I don't ever, in my life, forget to post!

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

A Long Time Gone by Karen White
Publication Date- June 3rd 2014

Goodreads Summary:

"We Walker women were born screaming into this world, the beginning of a lifelong quest to find what would quiet us. But whatever drove us away was never stronger than the pull of what brought us back...."

When Vivien Walker left her home in the Mississippi Delta, she swore never to go back, as generations of the women in her family had. But in the spring, nine years to the day since she’d left, that’s exactly what happens—Vivien returns, fleeing from a broken marriage and her lost dreams for children.

What she hopes to find is solace with "Bootsie," her dear grandmother who raised her, a Walker woman with a knack for making everything all right. But instead she finds that her grandmother has died and that her estranged mother is drifting further away from her memories. Now Vivien is forced into the unexpected role of caretaker, challenging her personal quest to find the girl she herself once was.

But for Vivien things change in ways she cannot imagine when a violent storm reveals the remains of a long-dead woman buried near the Walker home, not far from the cypress swamp that is soon to give up its ghosts. Vivien knows there is now only one way to rediscover herself—by uncovering the secrets of her family and breaking the cycle of loss that has haunted her them for generations.

This book sounds highly interesting and I hope I can get to read it once it's out.

What are you waiting on this Wednesday?

DNF Reviews- Delhi Mostly Harmless by Elizabeth Chatterjee, Final Cut by Uday Gupt and Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover

Goodreads Summary:

... Nobody who lives there, nobody at all, has much good to say about Delhi. Along with Milton Keynes, Detroit and Purgatory, Delhi is one of the worlds great unloved destinations.

So when Elizabeth Chatterjee makes her way from the cool hum of Oxford to the demented June heat of heat of Delhi to research her PhD, she find herself both baffled and curious about the je ne sais quoi of this city of graveyards and tombstones.

As flanur and sagacious resident, Liz takes us through the serpentine power structures, the idyll, the bullshit peeling layer after layer of the citys skin to reveal its aspirations, its insecurity, its charm and finally its urban dissonance.

Uncannily perceptive, predictive and hysterical, Delhi Mostly Harmless puts a firm finger on the electric pulse of Delhi

REVIEW:

Could/ Did Not Finish the book.

As crisp as the writing is and as interesting as it is to read about your own country from another person's point of view and as much as I would have liked to pick this book up and finish it off once and for all, I simply do not wish to continue with Delhi Mostly Harmless : One Womans Vision of the City. I've been reading it since more than a month now and even the most patient person's patience has a limit. I'm more than hundred percent sure that many people will really like the book but unfortunately, I'm not one of them.

I'd like to thank Random House India for a providing a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

RATING:

Goodreads Summary:

Six fast-paced, gripping short stories and a short novella, each with a Final Cut -- a surprising, unexpected and intriguing twist in the last paragraphs. In Hodsons Gold, a quest for the legacy of one of the most colourful characters of the Indian Mutiny of 1857 leads, via a poem in code and a coded poem, straight to a thoroughly startling address in Delhi. Two boys grow up, together after a fashion, in the 1990s and 2000s in Bishnupur, West Bengal and Kolkata, in Friends and their growing up years trigger an international sensation when revealed. Shooting for an improbable 4th Pulitzer Prize, a three-time winner arrives in Kolkatas Red Light district to discover, even more improbably, that It Happens Only in India. After setting up a roaringly successful business and after thirty-seven years, Will Reena? -- readers are asked, in the only short novella in the collection. It turns out, in The Last Supper, that the human models for a painting done over two hundred years ago in Kolkata were keepers of wholly unexpected secrets. On a Buddha Purnima day 2,000 years ago, the holiest day in the Buddhist calendar, a miracle occurs in Sarnath near Varanasi that should, by rights, have been recorded long ago in an immensely better book than this. And finally, in the story that lends its name to this book, magic, religion and celebrities combine in the Kolkata of 2011, to lead to a very different Final Cut.

REVIEW:

This was actually my first DNF of the year. I read the first short story in the book and it couldn't hold my attention. I really wish I could give it a chance but I don't have the patience and a huge list of books to be read is making it difficult.
I'd like to thank the publishing house for the book and my apologies for not finishing what I started especially since I asked for it myself.

REVIEW:

I. CANNOT. BELIEVE. THIS.

I love Colleen Hoover. I love her books, her characters and her stories. But for some reason, the few emotions I felt towards this book were pity, irritation and annoyance and the worst part is, I don't even know why. It's unusual for me to give up on a book after crossing the 50% mark but I couldn't take this anymore.
Too long chapters. Too little happening. I mean, come one. Get together and get it over with. Arg. I hate this. I really hate this and I feel so sad that one of my most favourite NA contemporary romance writers has disappointed me so much. Or maybe I've been expecting too much. Either way, I don't care. The protagonists can do what they want, it's none of my business anymore.

Sorry, Colleen.
