Review- Until Ashlyn by Aurora Rose Reynolds

Summary-

Dillon Keck knew Ashlyn Mayson was drunk when she suggested they get married. He knew he should have taken her back to their hotel room and put her to bed. Instead, he did what he had been craving to do since the moment they met.

Claim her as his.

Waking up married in Vegas isn't something Ashlyn Mayson ever thought would happen to her. Having Dillon, her boss, a man she thinks is a dick, insist they stay married is absurd, but every time he touches her, she gets lost in him and wonders if maybe they are meant to be together.

But someone isn't happy for Dillon and Ashlyn and their new found romance, and they're willing to do anything to keep them apart. Even commit murder.

Release date: December 27th, 2016

Review-

I have read many books by Aurora Rose Reynolds so I know that her books are not everyone's cup of tea. I prefer reading her books only from time to time because that's the way I enjoy them the most. Until Ashlyn is the third book in the Until Her series. If you have previously read or liked any of her books from the Until, Until Him or Until Her series there is a good chance you will like this one. For me, Until Ashlyn was a good read, just not one of my favourites.

Until Ashlyn is the story of Ashlyn, obviously as the name suggests, as well as Dillon. We'd met both of them previously and there were definitely sparks flying all over the place. Let's start with Ashlyn. I liked her as a heroine. She was sweet but she was not a pushover. She had her insecurities like any other normal person. Even though she was attracted to Dillon she was not sure where their relationship stood.

Then we have Dillon. Like all Aurora Rose Reynolds heroes Dillon was an alpha male. Some might find them over bearing and annoying but like I said before, I do enjoy such books from time to time. Dillon was the one who had solid feelings and was extremely sure of himself with Ashlyn. He was protective and possessive and nothing could keep him apart from Ashlyn.

As the summary suggests, the book starts off only with Ashlyn and Dillon getting married in Vegas. This is one of the tried and tested tropes of romance and it definitely works for Dillon and Ashlyn. These two are very stubborn so there were ups and down in the relationship but overall they made for a great couple.

The best part about Aurora Rose Reynolds books is the feelings of family she inculcates in her books. I loved seeing old faces and couples whom we all know and love. I also really enjoyed meeting and getting to know Dillon's side of the family. Until Ashlyn does have a mystery thread going on side by side but it was quite easy to figure out that plot. Overall, though Until Ashlyn may not be my favourite of the bunch, it was still a good read.

*Note: A copy of this book was provided by TRSOR promotions in exchange for an honest review. We thank them.

Feature Follow Friday #71

Feature and Follow is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read.

This week's prompt is:

Best or favorite villains?

Hmm I had to think a little bit about this one but then I decided to go for something I'd read a few years ago. I'm going for Warner from the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi. Warner was a person with many layers which we get to unravel as the series goes but I think he made for a good villain in Shatter Me

Summary-

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

You can follow us any way you'd like from our right side bar.

Who is your favourite villain?

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

1.     Tell us a little bit about yourself, Saket.

I am an engineer from NIT Raipur, did a Masters in International Business. I work in one of the global IT majors. An only son, I discovered solitude early in life and books were the only friends I had. My father being with Air force, could not help much as far as building lasting friendships goes. Moving city to city, for a child is traumatic, almost like a plant being plucked again and again. Books were the only thing in my life which offered a semblance of permanence and only resolution to my lingering loneliness. I live in Delhi with my wife and my only little daughter and looking at my daughter, growing, I believe she is the best poem I have ever written.

2.     What inspired you to write your book, The Rude Tenderness of Our Hearts?

I have previously written and published poetry. I was working, rather am working on a fictional novel, which is moving quiet slowly and leaves me baffled time and again. During one such moments of trying to grasp my breath, I saw an interesting video by Ray Bradbury. He advises that if your full-length novel is not moving as well as you want, or you are hit by that scary writers-block, instead of surrendering to the inertial, write short story. A short story has the same structure as a novel and is shorter in expanse and scope. This also means that you have less space within which your story needs to rise to its full potential. It is therefore a good exercise in the intermittent time between the novels. I took the advice and wrote few stories. Those who read them appreciated them for a different outlook it brought to very common events in our everyday lives. While I continued working on the fictional novel, I had seven stories with me. I decided to publish them as The Rude Tenderness of Our Hearts to see how they are received by the wide world outside.

3.     Are any of the characters in your book inspired by someone you know or are they complete results of your imagination?

While the characters would be influenced by people I meet, in terms of how they speak, their demeanour, their physical presence, the stories are fictional. It is always a writer’s interpretation, an imagined entry into the minds of his characters.

4.     Did you always want to become an author or was it something that you eventually thought of or realised? If not an author, what did you want to be when growing up?

I guess, I always wanted to be a writer. Even when I was going through the conventional middle-class family pressures of becoming either an Engineer or a Doctor. I remember reading Ramayana and Mahabharata at the age of nine or ten. I would read silently like an adult even in primary school. I wrote my first poem when I was in fourth standard. It was a Hindi poem, and I remember feeling proud of having written it. It was quiet a mature subject, something on poverty. I don’t remember the words of it, but I do remember that it was not a rhyming poem. My Hindi teacher was bemused and called up my father to confirm if it wasn’t his poem. My father had no idea that I had written a poem. He was quite pleased, but felt my readings needed to be curtailed and turned towards Mathematics and Science. Since then I kept on writing. It was only after my daughter came, that I decided to get my work published. It started with a collection of essays, If Truth Were to be Told, followed by two collection of poems and one Poetry collection written in collaboration with Ms Marta Moran Bishop, a brilliant writer based in the US.

5.     Tell us why readers should pick up your book.

There is immense amount of emotions, great deal of learning which is flowing at some subliminal level in the ordinary events unfolding around us. We miss them, pushed for time and engaged in our internal struggles. These stories offer you a very distinct vantage point, very deep insights. We all have stories of soldiers getting martyred on the borders, of beheading of soldiers, staring at us out of the Newspaper headlines. The Death of a Soldier, looks at the soldier as a very human entity, with aspiration for himself, for his family, for his love. Similarly, Shiv and Shailputri looks at much known story of Shiv and Parvati, but it is told from the perspective of the relation between Shailputri and her father. It is that often-missed vantage point which makes these stories extremely readable and invokes as the title suggests, the rude tenderness of our hearts.

6.     Who are some of your favourite authors and what are some of your favourite books?

I am an avid readers. While I mostly do not read contemporary, not out of any disrespect to the modern writers, but mostly because firstly, having drowned my growing up age in Halliday & Resnick Physics, I feel I have missed out on reading the great classics like Dostoevsky, Virginia Woolf, Joseph Conrad, Maugham, Charlotte Bronte and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, to name a few. Mostly I read classics, which apart from being fulfilling, I consider them missing part of my formal education in literature. I do love reading poetry as well, where Pablo Neruda, Yeats being my all-time favourite. I also read a lot of Urdu and Hindi literature and I am a die-hard fan of Ghalib and Sahir. I love writing which demonstrates a love of language. Very few contemporary books would qualify there, as I find most current literature seem to be written with set-formula for commercial success in mind and are bland in terms of depth of language and intensity of emotions. Contemporary writing that I enjoyed reading are far and between like My Salinger Years by Joana Rakoff, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthoy Doerr. Mostly however, it is classics for me, to which I keep going back, again and again.

7.     If you could read only one author’s works for the rest of your life, which author would you pick and why?

This is a tough call. My pick would hover among Conrad, Maugham, Virginia Woolf..yes, if it is only one, It has to be Dostoevsky.

8.     What are the three things you’d like to have with you on a deserted island?

Kindle, my phone and Picture of my daughter and wife.

9.     What advice would you give to aspiring young writers?

Read a lot, and write with your heart. Do not be trapped by the calculations of commercial success. Be kind and principled, it will reflect in your work.

10.     What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Reading.

On the surface he has it all, but with his home life disintegrating, his music well suddenly running dry, and the tabloids having a field day over his outrageous exploits, Oakley's team decides it's time for an intervention. The result: an image overhaul, complete with a fake girlfriend meant to show the world he's settled down.

Under ordinary circumstances she'd never have taken this gig, but with her family strapped for cash, she doesn't have much of a choice. So what if she thinks Oakley's a shallow, self-centered jerk? It's not like they're going to fall for each other in real life…right?

I recently read the entire Royals series by Erin Watt and really enjoyed it. It was quite addicting, so I can't wait for something more by this awesome writing duo.

Review-

I love Julie James' books. I just love the way she writes her characters. Her heroes and heroines are smart, sexy and independent. There's just something very modern about her books. That is just one of the many reasons I picked up Suddenly One Summer. Suddenly One Summer is the story of Victoria and Ford and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone who loves contemporary romance should pick this one up!

Let's start with Victoria. Victoria is a divorce lawyer. Her childhood memories combined with the fact that she sees unhappy endings every day has made her swear off marriage and relationships. She is happy with the way things are going for her until things change. I loved Victoria. She wanted to keep up her facade of being strong in front of everyone but she was human and she had her vulnerabilities. I just love Julie James' heroines and Victoria was no exception.

Then we have Ford. We'd actually met Ford before in one of Julie James' previous books. Ford is an investigative journalist and at first glance he may come off as a bit of a laid back person. But that is so not the case. Ford is passionate about his work and protective of his sister and niece. I loved how Ford slowly but surely started falling for Victoria and seeing the real her.

The best thing I like about Julie James' books is that her characters are first strong individual persons themselves. Ford and Victoria were both successful and hard working but together they find the emotional connection in each other. I loved the chemistry they shared and the intimate scenes between them were sweet and sexy.

I also loved that we got to see some of the previous couples we'd met in the FBI/U.S.Attorney series though Suddenly One Summer is a standalone. I loved Ford's friends, they were absolutely hilarious. Suddenly One Summer was a bit different as it goes like a slow burn in terms of romance but it was perfect for Ford and Victoria. I really liked Suddenly One Summer.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a management professional working with an MNC in Gurgaon. Writing has been my passion for long. When I say writing, storytelling is what I enjoy more than anything else. I have written a couple of articles too on women issues in magazines. I live in Delhi with my family.

  Tell us about your book.

Secrets, sins and struggles. Its has stories of five women who fight all odds in their lives to live their dreams.

What inspired you to write your book?

These stories are based on some real life incidences I have seen, heard or even felt. The story “Madam Bureaucrat” is loosely based on one of my close friend’s life and of course a writer’s imagination has done its job. “Women” is always an area of curiosity and I have a natural inclination towards weaving words around women.

Are any of the characters in your book inspired by someone you know or are they complete results of your imagination?

As said earlier, story Madam Bureaucrat is close to one of my friend’s life. For the first story, Brothel to Assembly, I literally visited Delhi’s famous red light area G.B road to have a feel of that darkest corner of our capital. This book is an amalgamation of reality and my imagination.

What kind of research went into writing your book?

Terrific research I would say. Walking the G.B road to get a feel of kotha , Studying the NGOs and their work, ins and outs of Rave party ,the world of drugs etc..; At one point I felt that I am an undercover cop investigating the grey areas.

Tell us why readers should pick up your book.

My book is far away from those loves and romance flooded in the market. If you want to “watch” while reading, something very gripping then go for “Secrets, sins and struggles”. The book won’t let you move away till you have reached the last line. You will long for more.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Movies and reading fiction (of course when I am not in office)

Give us glimpse into any normal day of your life.

Get up at 5, serve the kids and family, go to office at 8 am, reach home by 6:30 pm,
One hour family time, TV and writing.

What is next in store for you? Do you plan on writing more?

I have so many stories fighting in my mind to come out first. Currently, I am working on two novels simultaneously- one an inspirational story and the other a fiction on woman’s quest for love. Hopefully, 2017 will see one of them out in market.

According to you, in today’s day and age, how important a role does social media play in spreading the word about a book?

Its power. I am totally on social media. Its because of social media that a new writer like me could see her book in Amazon Best seller top 50 in just two days of launch.
