Waiting On Wednesday #223

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spines, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Pretty Girls Dancing by Kylie Brant
Publication date- January 1st 2018

Goodreads Summary:
Years ago, in the town of Saxon Falls, young Kelsey Willard disappeared and was presumed dead. The tragedy left her family with a fractured life—a mother out to numb the pain, a father losing a battle with his own private demons, and a sister desperate for closure. But now another teenage girl has gone missing. It’s ripping open old wounds for the Willards, dragging them back into a painful past, and leaving them unprepared for where it will take them next.
Bureau of Criminal Investigation agent Mark Foster has stumbled on uncanny parallels in the lives of the two missing girls that could unlock clues to a serial killer’s identity. That means breaking down the walls of the Willards’ long-guarded secrets and getting to a truth that is darker than he bargained for. Now, to rescue one missing girl, he must first solve the riddles that disappeared with another: Kelsey Willard herself. Dead or alive, she is his last hope.

This book sounds very interesting and I feel like it's been long since I read a book like this, so I'll definitely keep an eye out for it.

What are you waiting on this Wednesday?

When Drix was convicted of a crime--one he didn't commit--he thought his life was over. But opportunity came with the Second Chance Program, the governor's newest pet project to get delinquents off the streets, rehabilitated and back into society. Drix knows this is his chance to get his life back on track, even if it means being paraded in front of reporters for a while.

Elle knows she lives a life of privilege. As the governor's daughter, she can open doors with her name alone. But the expectations and pressure to be someone she isn't may be too much to handle. She wants to follow her own path, whatever that means.

Review-

I have been a fan of Katie McGarry's writing since quite some time so when I got an opportunity to read her latest, Say You'll Remember Me, I jumped on it. Katie McGarry has the unique ability to write gritty young adult books which voice the emotions and struggles of young adults who are struggling to find their voice in the world. I really enjoyed this book.

Say You'll Remember Me is the story of Drix and Elle. Let's start with Elle. Elle is the governor's daughter. All her life  she has been in the spotlight helping her father with the campaign. Elle is always portrayed to be perfect in the media when in reality no one is. I liked Elle. I could easily relate to her as she wanted to please her parents. I liked Elle's quirks and how she wanted to learn coding.

Then we have Drix. Drix was committed for a crime he didn't do. With the Second Chance Program he has an opportunity to finally get his life together and make something of it. Drix knows he need to follow the rules and do as the governor says. What he doesn't expect is to share a connection with the governor's daughter. I liked Drix and I liked how protective he was of his family and friends. He was a guy who knew how harsh the world could be.

Drix and Elle may seem like total opposites on paper but they really understood each other. Some of their struggles with people and expectations were similar and they could turn to each other in difficult times. The situations these two were in were realistic and authentic and I loved seeing them go through things together.

I also love how Katie McGarry weaves together a group of young adults who rely on each other and share a strong bond. I a really hoping that we can get a book for every single person because they all deserve something good in their life. Katie McGarry ends Say You'll Remember Me on a very real note. And I appreciated that. If you like young adult you should definitely give Katie McGarry books a try.

Blog Tour- xo, Zach by Kendall Ryan

Summary-

The first time we met was at a party.

Your ex arrived to show off the person he'd left you for last month, and you asked me to pretend to be your date.

I was more than happy to help. You were attractive, smart and witty--and that kiss we shared? It left me wanting you for days.

The second time we met was in my office on campus where we were both surprised to discover you were the new master’s degree student in poetry that I would be working with. You promised to be professional. I did no such thing.

The late nights and intense study sessions spent alongside you majorly throw me off my game. I want you, and I fight with myself daily over this fact.

I know I'm crass, that my sexual innuendos and dirty mouth annoy you, but I live for those two bright spots of color in your cheeks. If that's the only reaction I can get out of you, I'll gladly take it.

You hate Mondays so every Monday I slip an anonymous poem into your bag and your smile gets me through the week.

I think I'm falling for you, and I know it's wrong. I know that I'm only supposed to be the adviser to your program and nothing more, but here's the thing. I think you're falling for me too.

xo, Zach

Review-

xo, Zach by Kendall Ryan was a book that interested me solely due to its summary. I actually haven't read anything by Kendall Ryan so this was my first foray into the world of her writing. But I have definitely seen Kendall Ryan books around and they definitely pop up on my recommendations on goodreads.

xo, Zach is the story of Zach and Poppy. The book goes from both Zach and Poppy's point of views and I was glad for that. Let's start with Zach. Zach is a professor in a University. He wants to finish writing his novel and maybe move to New York some day. Zach has plans in his life and overall he is a pretty sorted guy. When he meets Poppy at a party she needs him to pretend to be her date for a few minutes.

What happens is that they discover that they have sparks between them. That is until the next day when Zach finds out Poppy is his student. I really liked Poppy. She was not impulsive or one to be swept away by her emotions. Poppy knew she had responsibilities and she couldn't just leave them behind. Poppy's hesitation is what makes the book a more of a slow build romance and that is what I liked about it.

When Poppy and Zach meet the chemistry between them is obvious. Zach is unsure in the beginning about what he wants from Poppy but I liked how he never changed his mind about her. Zach was a steady friend to Poppy and only wanted what was best for her. He actually cared about her thoughts and feelings and I liked him because of it.

xo, Zach is also filled with a bunch of side characters. I liked Zach's mother and we got to see where Zach got his unfiltered side from. I also liked Poppy's friends. They were always there for her. The only complaint I have from xo, Zach is the plot. I'm not going to spoil by giving the conflict away but I have to admit I JUST read a book containing a very similar plot. Which made it repetitive and left no curiosity from me. Overall xo, Zach was an enjoyable read.

REVIEW:

When I interviewed my classmate from college and now author, Tanya Dias on the blog, I was very curious to know more about her book, The Secret of the Sea, which I was delighted to know about. I always am very apprehensive about reviewing books for friends, because I don't like to be biased and also because I don't want to find or say anything negative, but I thought I should just give Tanya's book a try and see how it goes.

The Secret of the Sea is the story of Inspector Caji and a case that isn't filed in his police station but that has him curious anyway. The death of a young girl, Namita Kulkarni, shakes the entire state of Goa, and has everyone on the edge of their seat as people want to know what happened.

I must say that I was pleasantly surprised at how well Tanya writes, because clearly, I was thrown into the story from the first chapter itself. The Secret of the Sea did not seem like it was her first book. Tanya's writing was simple and precise, which is exactly how I like my stories to be, as there's no unnecessary interruption and drama.

Moving from the writing, the story telling was neat and extremely intriguing. I usually don't read mysteries because they are very easy to figure out, but with The Secret of the Sea, I found myself moving with Inspector Caji as every person introduced in the book seemed like a suspect, and the end result was slightly disappointing but truly mysterious and well done.

What I liked the most about The Secret of the Sea was the insight that I got into how the police and journalism departments work in controversial times. That was something that really stuck with me. I sure am looking forward to more of Inspector Caji's adventures, because I'm sure they'll be just as interesting and daring as this one.

Overall, this book is short, simple, gripping and impressive for a first time author. I would definitely recommend this one to fans of short mysteries.
