Waiting on Wednesday #281

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spines, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Things You Save in a Fire: A Novel by Katherine Center
Publication Date: August 13th, 2019

Summary-

From the New York Times bestselling author of How to Walk Away comes a stunning new novel about family, hope, and learning to love against all odds.

Cassie Hanwell was born for emergencies. As one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, she's seen her fair share of them, and she's excellent at dealing with other people's tragedies. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to uproot her life and move to Boston, it's an emergency of a kind Cassie never anticipated.

The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie's old job as it could possibly be. Hazing, a lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren't exactly thrilled to have a "lady" on the crew, even one as competent and smart as Cassie. Except for the handsome rookie, who doesn't seem to mind having Cassie around. But she can't think about that. Because she doesn't fall in love. And because of the advice her old captain gave her: don't date firefighters. Cassie can feel her resolve slipping...but will she jeopardize her place in a career where she's worked so hard to be taken seriously?

Katherine Center's Things You Save in a Fire is a heartfelt, affecting novel about life, love, and the true meaning of courage.

What are you waiting on? :)

Review- Fired Up by Jayne Ann Krentz

Summary-

More than three centuries ago, Nicholas Winters irrevocably altered his genetic makeup in an obsession-fueled competition with alchemist and Arcane Society founder Sylvester Jones. Driven to control their psychic abilities, each man's decision has reverberated throughout the family line, rewarding some with powers beyond their wildest dreams, and cursing others to a life filled with madness and hallucinations.

Jack Winters, descendant of Nicholas, has been experiencing nightmares and blackouts - just the beginning, he believes - of the manifestation of the Winters family curse. The legend says that he must find the Burning Lamp or risk turning into a monster. But he can't do it alone; he needs the help of a woman with the gift to read the lamp's dreamlight.

Jack is convinced that private investigator Chloe Harper is that woman. It doesn't take long for Chloe to pick up the trail of the missing lamp. And as they draw closer to the lamp, the raw power that dwells within it threatens to sweep them into a hurricane of psychic force.

Review-

Fired Up by Jayne Ann Krentz is the first book in her Dream light trilogy and the seventh book in her Arcane Society series. I have read a few books in the Arcane society series before but not in order. The whole concept upon which these books are based is quite interesting but sadly, Fired Up failed to meet my expectations. It was an okay read.

Jack Winters is the descendant of Nicholas Winters. The males in the Winters line are cursed that they will turn into a monster if they don't find the Burning Lamp. Plus he needs a woman to find the lamp, specifically one who can read dream light. I liked Jack. He was okay but nothing special. I liked his determination where Chole was concerned though.

Private Investigator Chloe Harper can read dream light. She solves many of he cases using her ability and when Jack asks for her help she agrees. I liked Chloe but again there was nothing super special that I adored about her. She was tenacious and strong.

There was definitely chemistry between Jack and Chloe but I didn't find it as appealing as it was in some of Jayne Ann Krentz's previous books. There is also the whole mystery plot line which forms the base of the story. It was interesting to see the various abilities and the whole Nightshade thing.

I also really liked meeting Fallon Jones again. I am quite intrigued by him and I really hope to read his book some day. All in all Fired Up was a good change of pace for me. I liked the mystery where romance took a back seat. It was not as interesting as some of her other books but still Fired Up was an okay read.

International Bestselling Author Michelle Beattie first found her love of romance in romantic comedies such as Romancing the Stone and Valley Girl (yes, she realizes that dates her).  It wasn't until after high school when she worked for a car rental company and had too much time on her hands that she started reading romances.  Historicals were her go-to and she raided many bookstores looking for historical western romances. Eventually she started thinking "what if" and "I'd have done that differently" and quietly started writing her own.  More than a dozen books later, Michelle has published in both digital and print platforms and her works have been translated in more than 4 languages. Michelle is a mother of two very strong, independent daughters.  She is a certified member of the Master Bowler's of Alberta and loves coaching and passing on her love for 5 pin bowling.  Besides bowling herself in a weekly league, she also likes to golf in the summer, play games, and read. Michelle lives in a solar-powered house in Central Alberta with her husband of almost 25 years, youngest daughter, and the cutest dog ever.
