REVIEW:

A Rural Coincidence is a short story by author Debjeet Mukherjee. The story received a commendable mention in the Delhi Poetry Slam in 2017. For a story that is of barely 10 pages, A Rural Coincidence has heaps of content that provides food for thought.

Set in a rural area- like the author says- might seem difficult to relate to, but it only makes one realise how similar we all really are in terms of feeling the way we do. In addition to that, however, just the way the minds of village folk work in a manner that is quick, practical and precise, was told really well by the author.

With barely a handful of characters, the story manages to remain very engrossing and entertaining. So while the focus is on one particular family, the reader gets to know quite a bit of information about the village as well which was refreshing as opposed to a boring narration of just one or two lives.

Debjeet Mukherjee has to be appreciated for putting so much content in so few pages in the most meticulous and relevant manner; his marvellous writing is a cherry on the cake. The only issue was that, like most short stories, it could have been longer as it would be super interesting to know more.
