But what if it's too late?

Heartbeat series:

REVIEW:

*NOTE: We (The Readdicts) received a copy of I Am Yours by Faith Sullivan in exchange for an honest review. We thank Faith for the book!

Author Faith Sullivan's Heartbeat trilogy has been one of the most mind boggling books I have read so far. Each book has been one of those books that keep you at the edge of your seat till the very ending. Luckily for me, I devour cliffhanger endings but when it comes to this particular series, I was dying to know how everything will be wrapped up and I feel proud to say that even though the whole plot of I Am Yours wasn't how I pictured it to be, the ending was exactly what I was hoping it'd be.
Like I did in my reviews of the first book and the second book, I won't be talking much about the story, but I will tell you about the three main characters from whose points of views the book goes by- Jada, Adam and Katie. I must say that I quite liked reading from three points of views, especially when it was one guy and two girls. A three people point of view isn't usually the case in love triangles, so this was pretty good to see.

Jada:

Jada is one kick ass heroine. She was strong, supportive and steady in I Am Yours as she was in Come What May. There was one point where I was really irritated with her, but I think I understood why she had to certain things and above anything else, I was most happy for Jada since by the end of this book, she finally seemed at peace with herself.

Adam:

I really liked Adam in Heartbeat but he made me not like him in Come What May. He had changed so much that I couldn't believe he did everything he did. In I Am Yours too, there were times when I just did not like Adam and his way to deal with situations but then again, there were times when I thought he was being pretty good overall.

Katie:

Katie's side of the story is something different altogether. I just do not understand her. In Heartbeat, I liked how sweet and innocent Katie was and in I Am Yours, the Katie we meet seemed just like the one we first met and the two- personality wise and in a general life situations sort of way- are so similar to one another that it's highly creepy.

While the three main characters each had certain qualities I liked and many qualities I didn't like, they were very unique and well portrayed by Faith Sullivan, who has created three very creative and quite interesting people. Not just them, even side characters like Adam's brother Brian and his fiancé Kelly and her guide Savoy were each distinct and well written characters.
Like I have said before, this series is mind boggling and I'm not sure if I've even understood the whole story yet but what I can say and what matters most is that I enjoyed the books overall. While Come What May remains my favourite of the series, I'd say that I Am Yours did answer questions but I would still like to know more. Anyway, I loved how much of psychological and mind games were involved in the story. This book was a short and much needed read that I found pretty good.

Book 3 in the HEARTBEAT series

Adam is at a crossroads.

He has Katie on his mind and Jada in his bed.

Now with the ultimate choice before him, he must decide between fantasy and reality.

Katie's his dream girl, but Jada's his best friend, his partner. As a paramedic, he's supposed to save lives, not wreck them. Yet his failure to commit leaves a trail of heartache in his wake.

Things come to a head at his brother's wedding when a surprise announcement leaves Adam scrambling to pick up the pieces. Sure, women find his shaggy blond hair and aquamarine eyes irresistible. But to him, sex is nothing more than a means of escape ... until it turns into a psychological trap.

His mind is telling him one thing, while his heart is beating another. He's not sure what he wants when it comes to a serious relationship. Sorting out his feelings, he finally comes to a startling realization. He is capable of love.

But what if it's too late?

Excerpt:

His shaggy hair is falling in his eyes as water drips from the ends. The buttons of his shirt are undone and droplets cling to his bare chest. His lips are parted and his blue eyes radiate a mixture of elation and desire. He knows that he’s trespassing where he doesn’t belong, but he doesn’t feel the need to ask anyone’s permission to enter my bedroom either.

I tilt my head and gaze up at him, my hair tumbling over my shoulder. He advances toward me, looking somewhat guilty, bordering on apologetic. He realizes he shouldn’t be here, but he is. And I don’t want him to leave. I like the danger of having him so close.

He blinks and raindrops fall from his eyelashes before running down his face. And that’s all it takes for the sheer happiness of the moment to light up my face. I rush toward him as he greets my smile with one of his own. Its sincerity warms my heart as he looks at me like he’s just completed the longest journey of his life, filled with relief at finally reaching his destination. He’s come home. He’s where he’s supposed to be. And if I’m being honest with myself, I feel like I’ve been waiting for him all along.

The force pulling me to him is too strong to ignore. I don’t fight it. I give into it. I let it take me over. I stride up to him, reaching up on my toes, my fingers dancing across his neck as I take his lips with mine. Pressing myself into him, the front of my white t-shirt is soaked instantly. But instead of experiencing any kind of chill, I feel like I’m burning up.

The kiss is gentle this time, lasting only a few seconds before he draws me into a hug, laying his sopping head against my shoulder while wrapping his arms around my waist, drawing me as close as he possibly can to his body. He winces when I squeeze him back tightly, causing him to loosen his grip on me and step away. I reach up one hand at a time to examine his face as he tries to look down, refusing to meet my gaze. Finally, he gives me a mournful smile as I persist. Silencing my worries, he runs a hand lightly across my face before bringing me in for another kiss. He’s so careful with me, so tender. He breaks away to smile at me again, a look of wonderment in his eyes, before resuming our kiss.

Slowly releasing my lips, I allow my hands to roam down his chest as I start to tug on his shirt. He complies with my request, but he seems to be in pain as I help remove the sleeves from his arms. I glance up at him in concern, and he whispers, “My ribs. They were broken not too long ago. I don’t think they ever fully healed.”

He hangs his wet shirt on the bedpost as I run my hand gently over his chiseled abs. He bends his head to the side, closing his eyes. He doesn’t open them as I glide my fingers over the scar on his forehead, where undoubtedly he had stitches at one time. My heart contracts as I ponder what happened to him. He submits to my touch, moving his head along the path of my fingertips, yielding to my efforts to examine him. He doesn’t resist, but I can sense he doesn’t want me to linger on his injuries either.

His hair appears darker now that it’s wet, and I can’t help twisting my fingers through the strands at the back of his neck as he rests his forehead against mine. He’s so close to me. All I can see are his eyes. He leans back, pushing my hair away from my face. The way he is looking at me is like he’s taking in every part of me. It’s hard for him to keep his lips off mine as he brushes a featherweight kiss across them. It feels so intense. I have to look down for a minute.

When I’m ready to meet his eyes again, his hands travel up my sides, encouraging me to lift my arms. I do so, and within seconds, his fingers are at the hem of my shirt, pulling it up and over my head in one swift movement. I help him free my long hair from inside the collar, reaching behind me to hold it up, trying not to think about my bare breasts being visible. He drinks in every inch of me, and that smile is back on his face as his hands caress my back. This time, it’s Adam who lifts my hair away, entwining it through his fingers while resting his chin on my shoulder, allowing his free hand to roam the full expanse of my back from shoulder to hip. I slide my arms around his lean, muscular body as he buries his face against my neck. When he stands upright again, he nuzzles my ear as I extend a trail of kisses along his jaw. He sighs in contentment as his stubble bristles against my lips.

Review- Come What May by Faith Sullivan

Goodreads Summary:

Adam is through with love.

He unravels blaming himself for what happened with Katie.

His final moments with her echo through his nightmares.

She owns him body and soul.

To dull the pain, Adam invites a string of women into his bed. Fueled by alcohol and desperation, his meaningless hook-ups provide little comfort. When he closes his eyes, it's Katie he sees.

Despite his intentions, Adam's bond with Jada deepens as they respond to a series of emotional calls. Their mutual attraction becomes undeniable. But how can he give his heart to Jada when it still belongs to Katie?

REVIEW:

Just like I felt with the first book of the Heartbeat seriesHeartbeat (my review of which can be read here), I don't know what to feel about Come What May. With both these books by author Faith Sullivan, I know that no matter how much time I give myself to think and ponder over them, it's just not going to be enough. I love the way Faith's books end but they leave me feeling confused, empty and utterly shocked, in a good way because I'm weird that way.
Come What May starts out with Adam starting a new life after losing Katie. He completely changes his life by opting for drinking and casual sex, something I would never have imagined the Adam from Heartbeat go for. He was just too good to go that way. But things change. He is broken, depressed and sad. He keeps seeing Katie everywhere and he can't seem to have a hold on himself. I really don't know if I love or hate Adam in
Come What May  There were so many times when I wanted to comfort him, but then some dumb things that he did at some point came up and changed the whole way in which I look at him. Ugh. I don't know. All I can say is that the Adam from Come What May is very different from the Adam we met in Heartbeat. The only common aspect to both is his love for Katie. And the fact that paramedics is still his life.
And that's where he meets Jada. Jada was a nice girl who was just as broken as Adam and had a past as heartbreaking and devastating as his. There were times when even she got on my nerves, but the poor girl has seen a lot of trouble and my heart cried out for her. I loved how she remained casual with Adam even though she had really strong feelings for him. She tried to put it all away and I was always with her when she was trying to teach Adam a lesson in a subtle way. She truly helped Adam heal and I only wish she herself can heal soon too because she a nice girl.
Somehow, when together, Jada and Adam seemed comfortable and easy going. They are both assigned as partners on the ambulance Adam drives and they make for a great team. The romance between the two is just about brewing when something or the other comes up and cools it off. I couldn't help compare Jada and Katie and I really have no idea which girl I want Adam to end up with in I Am Yours. All I can say is that I am really looking forward to the final book.
Author Faith Sullivan's writing is again very smooth and simple. I love the length of her books and how details are given without making it sound very boring. The alternating points of views were essential and made both Jada and Adam's sides of the story understandable and real.
Come What May was very emotional and I experienced an assortment of feelings while reading it. Even though I loved the way Heartbeat ended, I still am not sure of my final thoughts on it. After Come What May  however, I've understood Adam better and the book itself was a notch higher than the first book, so the fact that the books are getting better and better gives me immense hope for a nice ending to the stories of each of the characters.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

Hi Faith! Welcome to The Readdicts! It's lovely to have you here. Please make yourself at home and we hope you have a nice time answering our very many questions!

1. I know you don't like doing this, Faith, but you're going to have make an exception here and tell us a bit about yourself.

Faith: LOL, okay if I have to :-)
I started reading at age four and basically never stopped. I have a bachelor's degree in literary studies and I've worked in the publishing industry in some capacity for nearly fifteen years. My online experience with the written word began when I started to review books. At the beginning of this year, I decided to publish my first novel and dive into the deep end.

2. Tell us something about yourself that no one knows, something totally random. *puppy face* Please?

Faith: I'm not a romance author with a hot husband at home. I'm still trying to figure the whole love thing out.

3. Did you always want to be an author? If not, then what did you want to be?

Faith: I'm more of a behind-the-scenes person. I never thought I'd have the guts to put myself out there as a published author. I always hoped I'd one day have the courage and I guess that day has finally arrived. Sometimes it's good to surprise yourself.

4. Okay. Now we will get to your (and our) favourite part! Tell us about your books.

Faith: My books are crazy. Some people love them. Some people hate them. They're all written from the heart and I try to infuse as much genuine emotion into them as possible. I like to keep them fast-paced so readers don't get bored and I try to shake things up by doing unconventional things. I'm willing to shock readers with a head-scratcher of an ending. I'm up for radically changing a character's personality in a series. I like to explore themes that most would never put together like 9/11 and romance. My brain just likes to think outside the box and either you get it or you don't (and I'm okay with it if you don't!).

5. You write books that fall under the New Adult genre. Many people define NA in my different ways. What, according to you, is New Adult? (Age, storyline, etc.)

Faith: For me, New Adult characters are somewhere between eighteen and twenty-five. That's really my only main requirement because there are so many different directions a writer can go in from there. I don't like to stifle creativity. The plot can take so many different directions with characters in that age group. It's such a freeing concept for a writer because there are no limits to what you can do. You can make it erotic or not. You can set it in college or not. You can deal with more serious issues or not. There's a whole range of emotions you can tap into that aren't really found in other categories or genres. Discovering your individuality. Learning what you want out of life. Falling for someone who isn't your first romance. That's why I love it.

6. I admire how you believe that life isn't a bed of roses and reality can be harsh. When writing the Heartbeat series, did you ever feel that readers (who love happy endings) would have problems with the way Heartbeat ended?

Faith: First off, I never thought anyone would even read HEARTBEAT. I thought it would be pretty much ignored. I was a debut author with a book no one had ever even heard of. So to get the reaction that it did was pretty overwhelming. I wasn't prepared for how passionate readers were over the ending. But I guess it means I did my job if I got them to feel something, even if they wanted to kill me :-)

7. As you've shown in Unexpected, 9/11 drastically affected the whole of US and the world as well. I've read that the book is very close to your heart. Can you tell us about the medley of emotions that you experienced while writing the story?

Faith: It was a catharsis really. I've been harboring the emotions of that day for a long time. I don't think they'll ever completely go away. I'll probably be carrying them around with me for the rest of my life but it was comforting to receive the reader feedback from people who went through something similar. That's all I ever wanted was to connect with others so we could all feel - 'Hey, at least we're not alone.' And for me, that's the power of writing at its core.

8. You are one of the most friendliest authors that I know and you take a lot of joy in connecting with readers. Do the readers, and their likes, dislikes, opinions, views, etc., in any way, help you decide what goes into your stories?

Faith: Absolutely! I always listen to what the readers have to say. Like I said, I never thought I'd have readers so just the fact that people took the time to read my work is extremely humbling. I want to give as much back to them as I can for investing their time in me. But conversely, I have to follow my heart and where it takes me when it comes to letting my creative spirit flow through my writing. If I started to follow trends or write what other people expect, then I wouldn't be remaining true to myself and I'd feel like a fraud.

9. What's next in store for you after the Heartbeat series is completed?

Faith: Well, there's going to be another release TAKE ME NOW (August 2013 or sooner) before the release of the third HEARTBEAT book, I AM YOURS (October 2013).

I just hope to keep writing and publish at least one novel every two months or so. The ebook phenomenon is such a fast-moving animal and readers are inundated with new titles on what appears to be a daily basis. So to remain current and keep your name out there, you have to publish a lot and quite frequently. At least in my case, because I'm not a 'known' author.

10. Who are some of your favourite authors and what are some of your favourite books?

Faith: Two of my favorites that I've read this year are IF YOU STAY by Courtney Cole and EASY by Tammara Webber. They just hit it out of the park, in my opinion. They're soft, yet they're gritty. They're real,  yet they're swoon-worthy. I always enjoy the combination of hard and soft.

We also have a round of fun questions lined up for you, Faith!
This includes "Favourites" and "If you could..." All you have to do is give us a one-worded or a one-lined  answer to the questions below. It will be seriously cool if you give us a "why?" for the "If you could..." questions!
These are going to be difficult and easy for the same reason- you get to pick only one!
So have  a blast and here we go!

1. Favourite colour? Blue because it's calming.

2. Favourite food?  Pasta because I like it wherever I go, you can't mess it up.

3. Favourite drink? Diet Coke because it keeps my brain functioning.

4. Favourite word? Hope because if you don't have that, you have nothing.

5. Favourite place? Anywhere in nature (the beach, the woods, etc.) because it's where I feel most at home.

6. Favourite singer/ band? Pink because she's the real deal.

7. If you could take only one author out for dinner, who would you take?

Sorry for this one, I'd have to take two. KellyHashway and Meradeth Houston because we've never met in person but they support me on a daily basis and that says a lot.

8. If you could keep only one book with you, which book would you keep?

THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE because of the beauty of the language and it would give me a lot of food for thought.

9. If you could take only one book boyfriend on a secluded island with you, who would you take?

ADAM from my HEARTBEAT series because we would be able to help each other work out our problems. Yeah, really sexy. I know :-)

10. If you could listen to only one song for the rest of your life, which song would you choose?
I WILL WAIT by Mumford and Sons because of the utter humility of the lyrics, they inspire me.

Thank you so much for spending time with us today, Faith! It was a pleasure to have you over. And we hope you had a great time. Feel free to stop by anytime you feel like it.
We wish you lots of happiness and success in the future. Happy reading and happy writing!

Review- Heartbeat by Faith Sullivan

Goodreads Summary:

Katie and Adam are afraid of love.

She carries the scars of a first kiss gone terribly wrong.

He uproots his life to flee the stinging betrayal of an ex.

When trust is no longer an option, all romance is suspect.

As a young paramedic, Adam rescues people for a living but cannot save himself. Katie, just out of high school, struggles with a tortured home life she cannot escape.

Everything changes when Katie hops into the front seat of Adam's ambulance. Overwhelmed by what they are feeling, neither possess the confidence to make the first move. They walk away from each other, full of regret.

To find her, Adam risks his future. To be with him, Katie sacrifices her security.

Little do they know, what little time they do have, is being measured by a heartbeat that is slowly dying out.

REVIEW:

No. No, no, no. It just cannot end that way. I love love love abrupt, cliff-hanger and even sad endings and I know that when everything is going fine something bad is about to happen and yeah, life is like that. But the way Heartbeat ended...
Oh my God! I just cannot get over it. I don't know what to think of it. I don't know what to make of it. Hell, I don't even know how and why and when it happened because it happened so quickly. I don't even want to bring myself to accept it. Yeah, I don't know.
When I read what author Faith Sullivan had to say about Heartbeat on Goodreads, I completely agreed with and loved what she had to say. After that, I immediately knew it was a book I had to read. I had prepared myself for the ending but when I actually got to it and read Katie and Adam's story, it was devastating and heart-breaking.
This review is going to be short, because honestly, there isn't much to say about the story. You have to read it to find out what happens. The characters, however, have a lot that can be said about them.
Katie lives with her dad who doesn't give a damn about her but still wants to keep her under his eyes and watch her every move and her grandmother, who is a very sweet and warm lady. Katie and her grandmother live a rather sad life and are as good as jailed under the the roof of Katie's father's house. I know that for most readers, Katie will appear to be way too innocent and naive in today's day and age. But in some way, I could completely relate to her and understand her. She has a golden heart. What happened to Katie shouldn't have happened but life is like that and even though I am unsure what to feel about it, I loved how unexpectedly realistic it was.
Adam has left his hometown because his ex girlfriend was cheating on him. He is pursuing his studies in paramedics and drives the hospital ambulance. His brother Brian and his parents are very helpful. Adam, as a guy, was very kind and supportive. He too, just like Katie, has a heart of gold.
Together, Katie and Adam were a joy to read about. I loved how they both basically reflected the exact same feelings for each other since the first time they met.
Overall, like most books that end the way Heartbeat did, I don't know how to put my feelings in place.
Author Faith Sullivan's writing is systematic. The dual points of views, as always, were necessary and favourable to read. Faith has a way of showing the real picture by amalgamating truth and reality and I admire the author for just that. Life truly is not a bed of roses and neither is it fair.
I'm really looking forward to know more in the upcoming books of the Heartbeat seriesCome What May and I Am Yours and I am counting on Faith's promise to give the readers a detailed explanation of everything.

Despite his intentions, Adam's bond with Jada deepens as they respond to a series of emotional calls. Their mutual attraction becomes undeniable. But how can he give his heart to Jada when it still belongs to Katie?

EXCERPT:

But I’m unsure of where this is going. Is he trying to open up or just making idle conversation? Whatever it is, it’s not enough for me. I crouch, hanging my legs over the side. A cool breeze issues from the waterfall. Its hypnotic rhythm is so relaxing. I can stretch out right here and fall asleep. I lean back on my elbows and close my eyes against the sun. So I’m startled when something smacks me in the face.

It’s Adam’s t-shirt. He’s standing before me in nothing but his jeans. “Care for a swim, Jada?” Laughing, he peers over the edge. All I see are the broad lines of his back. It doesn’t get any sexier than that.

“You’re going to jump into that tiny little pool of water?” My pulse is racing, but somehow I keep my voice steady.

“No, we’re going to climb down together. But you’re going to have to lose some of that clothing first.” His gaze runs across the length of my body, and I’m on fire.

“If you think I’m going to strip down…”

I shut up when I realize he’s bending over me. “Well, you can rid yourself of these muddy shoes for starters.” He undoes the laces and gently slips them off. My breathing gets heavy when his fingers slide up to remove my sock. He doesn’t stop there. On his knees before me, his touch glides up my leg as he rolls the cuff of my pants.

“That takes care of the bottom half. Now what about the top?” I ask brazenly. I’m fighting to regain control of the situation, but it’s a lost cause.

He pulls me up with him, and our bodies are so close together. He grips my waist and I start to get dizzy. Drawing me in, I’m surprised when he tugs at the fabric of my shirt, untucking it in a series of quick motions. His actions cause my chest to rub against his. My legs get shaky and I think I’m going to have to grab onto him for support. But I resist and somehow keep my hands to myself. Slowly, he unfastens the last two buttons and ties the shirt at my waist. His fingertips linger over the exposed skin of my midriff. His touch is driving me wild. I can’t take much more of this.

Stepping back, I feel so exposed even though I’m not showing that much skin. He’s practically naked in front of me and he doesn’t seem embarrassed at all. It’s like he wanted to bring me to some secluded spot in order to seduce me. Was this his plan all along? I’m so confused. Nothing is ever clear with him. It’s impossible to figure out what’s going through his mind and why he’s practically taking off my clothes in the middle of the woods.

And that’s the problem. I kind of like it. His unpredictability keeps me guessing, and I’ve never been so turned on. I’m practically panting before him, wishing his hands would explore every inch of me. But for some reason, it seems like there’s an invisible barrier separating us. He teases me but doesn’t take it further. And all that does is make me want him more. I’m not the type to pursue a guy, but I’d put myself out there for him if I knew that was what he was after. But what if it’s not? We do have to work together, and things can get really awkward between us if I’m wrong.

A shadow of a frown crosses his face when he sees me back away from him. Whatever was happening in that moment is over—I can’t tell if he’s disappointed or relieved. His chest rises and falls as he clenches his fists. The sheer masculine beauty of his sculpted torso is right in front of me. Yet he appears so fragile. Like one hasty word from me will break him. We’re so close. If only I knew his true intentions. Is he just playing with me or is he after something more?

“C’mon, let’s cool off.” But I can’t allow myself to get that close to him again. My thoughts scatter just picturing him against me in the water. With my inhibitions lowered, I’ll be too tempted. If I let down my guard and give into him, I’ll only regret it later when he acts like nothing’s changed between us.

“Nah, you go ahead. I’m just going to stick my feet in.” The creases in his brow deepen, but I don’t stop. “If I have any hope of salvaging this uniform, I don’t think it’ll take any more wear and tear.” It’s the lamest excuse ever, but it’s all I have to go with.

“Suit yourself.” He’s pissed as he makes his way down the rocky incline. He doesn’t even wait for me. What girl wouldn’t want to fool around with him in the water after all that? Who would ever turn him down?

Only me.
