Review- Saving June by Hannah Harrington

 BOOK SUMMARY:

If she'd waited less than two weeks, she'd have been June who died in June. But I guess my sister didn’t consider that. REVIEW:

I had been wanting to read Saving June since it was released a few years ago. But knowing me, I take all the time in the world to actually pick up a book and read it. When I released that I had covered up all the Young Adult reads on my shelf, I turned to Janhvi and asked her for a few recommendations when she reminded me that I wanted to read Saving June and she, very kindly, let me borrow her paperback.

Saving June is the story of Harper who loses her sister June because she commits suicide. Harper tries as much as she's able to, to figure out exactly what was wrong with her sister, but turns out, it is too late. So instead, she decides to do what her sister always dreamed of doing: going to California and embracing freedom. She then goes on a road trip from Michigan to California with her closest friend Laney and mysterious boy Jake. More than being a way to free June, the road trip ends up being necessary for Harper.

I love books about suicide, but I always have this one issue because I want a suicide to be justified in order for me to accept it. Now when it comes to Saving June, I have mixed feelings a about the suicide because we barely got a glimpse into June's life, let alone knowing her in and out. But on the other hand, the way she was portrayed and Harper's description of her sister did make some point which I could accept.

All that aside though, considering as this is Harper's story, Saving June was a very nicely written book which takes up an important issue in a very interesting and straightforward manner. Author Hannah Harrignton has written a lovely book that is a must read for fans of coming of age Young Adult reads, because this isn't a book you read, it's an experience you live.

Excerpt Reveal + Sneak Peek- Beautiful Mistake by Vi Keeland

BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE
By Vi Keeland
RELEASING JULY 17TH

BLURB

The first time I met Caine West was in a bar.
He noticed me looking his way and mistakenly read my scowling as checking him out.
When he attempted to talk to me, I set him straight—telling him what I thought of his lying, cheating, egomaniacal ass.
You see, the gorgeous jerk had wined and dined my best friend--smooth talking her into his bed, all along failing to mention that he was married.
He deserved every bit of my tongue-lashing and more for what he'd done.
Especially when that lazy smile graced his perfect face in response to my rant.
Only it turned out, the man I'd just told off wasn't the right guy.
Oops.  My mistake.
Embarrassed, I slunk out without an apology.
I was never going to see the handsome stranger again anyway, right?
That’s what I thought…until I walked into class the next morning.
Well, hello Professor West, I’m your new teaching assistant.
I’ll be working under you…figuratively speaking.
Although the literal interpretation might not be such a bad thing—working under Professor West.
This was going to be interesting…

        An excerpt from Beautiful Mistake…

The class was completely empty. I wasn’t even sure he knew I was still in my seat. If he did, he was good at ignoring me as he packed up his laptop.
“Contrary to the rumors you’ve probably heard, I don’t bite.”
I jumped when he spoke. Now that the lecture hall was no longer filled with students, the acoustics of the large space bounced his deep voice all over the walls.
I stood and began my walk of shame down to the front of the classroom. There was no doubt I owed the man an apology, even if he wasn’t a professor—a professor who would be my new boss for at least the next fifteen weeks. I wanted to kick myself in the ass for not apologizing last night before I left the bar. Now it would seem like I was only doing it because of the situation I was in.
Which was true, don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t want it to seem that way.
I took a deep breath. “I’m so sorry about last night.”
His face was unreadable. “I figured you might be, right about now.”
“I obviously thought you were someone else.”
“So I assumed. You thought I was the asshole. The one with the big dick, was it?”
I shut my eyes. For the last ninety minutes, I’d replayed the entire exchange from last night over and over in my head. I thought I’d remembered everything I said, but apparently I hadn’t. When I reopened my eyes, Professor West was still watching me. His stare was pretty damn intense.
I started to babble. “My friend Ava went out with this guy Owen for a month or so. He was full of shit from day one, but she didn’t see it. Actually walked up to her when she was leaving work one night and said, ‘Do you mind if I walk you home?My mother always told me to follow my dreams.’ She fell for it, the entire act, from the first day. Then one Saturday, he was supposedly out of town on business, and she was across town running errands for her mother. She took a shortcut through Madison Square Park on her way back from the grocery store and ran into him. He was with his wife and kids.”
“And you thought I was him, apparently?”
I nodded. “She came in during my shift and started drinking Long Island iced teas. When Owen walked in, she pointed to where he was standing and said he was the one in the blue shirt.”
“And we were both wearing blue shirts, I take it?”
I couldn’t help but smile, thinking of Ava last night. “Actually, no. Ava’s not much of a drinker. Turned out she was more sloshed than I thought. Owen’s shirt was brown—not even black that could be mistaken as navy or something.”
I saw Professor West’s lip twitch.
“Anyway, I’m really sorry. I barely gave you a chance to speak, and then when I realized what had happened, I was so mortified I didn’t even stop to apologize.”
“I accept your apology for last night. Even though you shouldn’t be approaching a man in the hallway to tell him off alone, your intentions were admirable.”
I should have shut up and been grateful he’d accepted my apology. Should have. “Why can’t I approach a man in the hallway?”
He leveled me with a stare. “Because you’re five foot nothing in a loud bar, and no one would have heard you if I’d dragged you into the men’s room and locked the door.”
I folded my arms over my chest. “I can take care of myself.”
“I didn’t say you couldn’t. I said you shouldn’t put yourself in those situations.”
“But you insinuated that I couldn’t by making that statement.”
He zipped his leather bag closed. “Ms. Martin, I just accepted your apology for calling me an asshole last night. Would you like me to retractthat acceptance?”
God, I really was an idiot. Being around this man seemed to turn me into a psychopath. “No. I’m sorry. I acted like a jerk, and I’d like to start over, if that’s possible.”
He nodded. “Everything prior to this morning is forgotten.”
“Thank you.”
“But this morning is not. I won’t accept lateness. Don’t let it happen again.”
I swallowed. “It won’t.”
He lifted his worn, brown leather laptop bag over one shoulder. “Meet me here at five tomorrow. We’ll go over the syllabus and the classes you’ll teach, as well as my grading rubric.”
That was smack in the middle of my shift, but I’d figure something out. “Okay.”
“Are you done for the day?”
“I am. I actually have to get to work. I’m covering Ava’s shift because she isn’t feeling too well after last night. We both work at O’Leary’s.”
“You waitress there?”
“Waitress, bartend, occasionally tell off patrons.”
That earned me a full smile from Professor West. God, he should do that more often. No, forget that. He definitely shouldn’t.
“I’ll walk out with you.”
We walked through the halls together and out to the parking lot. When we arrived at my car, I stopped. “This is me. So…five o’clock tomorrow?”
Professor West looked at my beat-up old Subaru. “You’re parked in a spot reserved for the Provost. You got a parking ticket.” He squinted. “Actually, it looks like you havetwo parking tickets. Was your inspection expired or something?”
Crap. “Umm…no. I keep an extra ticket in the glove compartment and stick it on my windshield when I’m forced to park illegally.”
His brows shot up. “Inventive.”
“Obviously it doesn’t always work.”
“Obviously.”
“They need more parking. When you’re late, it’s impossible to find a spot.”
He studied me. “Lateness is a frequent occurrence for you, I take it?”
“Unfortunately, it is.”
“Then I should clarify something I said earlier.”
“Oh, no, that’s not necessary. I won’t be late for your class.”
He took a step closer and leaned in. “I’m glad to hear that, Ms. Martin. But that’s not what needs clarification.”
I swallowed. God, he smells good.
“Earlier I told you I didn’t bite students.” He smiled, and I felt the wickedness from it shoot down to some interesting places. “I don’t. But I make no promises about not biting feisty TAs.”

Teaser Tuesday #75

- The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

Summary-
Nemesis (n.)
1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome;
2) A person’s undoing;
3) Joshua Templeman.
Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman hate each other. Not dislike. Not begrudgingly tolerate. Hate. And they have no problem displaying their feelings through a series of ritualistic passive aggressive maneuvers as they sit across from each other, executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company. Lucy can’t understand Joshua’s joyless, uptight, meticulous approach to his job. Joshua is clearly baffled by Lucy’s overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and Pollyanna attitude.

Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to a head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job…But the tension between Lucy and Joshua has also reached its boiling point, and Lucy is discovering that maybe she doesn’t hate Joshua. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.

This. Book. Is. Hilarious. I'm loving it!

Introductory Post: Summer TBR Wipeout 2017

I. Love. Readathons. It's that simple really. I get a lot of reading done during them and try not to veer off track by rereading old favourites again. This Summer TBR Wipeout hosted by The Candid Cover seemed like an awesome opportunity to clear some of the paperbacks lying on my shelf as I tend to prefer ebooks. But I've also added a bunch of review copies and some books I've wanted to read since some time in my to-be-read pile.

There's no guarantee that I will finish reading all of them. I've put in a lot of choices and I may just add/read something else depending on my mood and excitement level.

I'm super excited to get started! :)

EXCERPT:
Kylie Masters watched him walk into her shop like he owned it while simultaneously pretending not to notice him. A tricky balancing act that she’d gotten good at. Problem was, like it or not, her attention was caught and captured by the six foot, leanly muscled, scowling guy now standing directly in front of her, hands shoved in his pockets, body language clearly set to Frustrated Male.
She sighed, gave up the ridiculous pretense of being engrossed by her phone, and met his gaze. She was supposed to smile and ask how she could help him. That’s what they all did when it was their turn to work the front counter at Reclaimed Woods. They were to show potential clients their custom made goods when what they really wanted was to be in the back workshop on their own, individual projects. Kylie’s specialty was dining room sets, which meant she wore a thick apron and goggles to protect herself and was perpetually covered in sawdust.
And she did mean covered in sawdust. Wood flakes dusted her hair, stuck to her exposed arms, and if she’d been wearing any makeup today, they’d have been stuck to her face as well. In short, she was not looking how she wanted to be looking while facing this man again. Not even close. “Joe,” she said in careful greeting.
He gave her a single head nod.
Okay, so he wasn’t going to talk first. Fine. She’d be the grownup today. “What an I do for you?” she asked, fairly certain he wasn’t here to shop for furniture. He wasn’t exactly the domesticated type.
Joe ran a hand through his hair so that the military short, dark silky strands stood straight up. He wore a black t-shirt stretched over broad shoulders, loose over tight abs, untucked over cargos that emphasized his mile-long legs. He was built like the soldier he’d been not too long ago, as if keeping fit was his job – which given what he did for a living, it absolutely was. He shoved his mirrored sunglasses to the top of his head, revealing ice blue eyes that could be hard as stone when working but she knew that they could also soften when he was amused, aroused, or having fun. He was none of those three things at the moment.

Review- Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Lord of the Flies on Goodreads

 BOOK SUMMARY:

Originally published in 1954, William Golding's Lord of the Flies is one of the most disturbing and celebrated novels of modern times.

A plane crashes on a desert island. The only survivors are a group of schoolboys. At first they revel in the freedom and celebrate the absence of grown-ups.

Soon though, as the boys' fragile sense of order begins to collapse, their fears start to take on a sinister, primitive significance. Suddenly, the world of cricket, homework and adventure stories seems a long way away. The boys are faced with a more pressing reality — survival — and the appearance of a terrifying beast who haunts their dreams.

‘No living writer has represented the fragility of man's enterprises so marvelously as Golding.’ A. S. Byatt, Evening Standard

REVIEW:

Honestly, I was so looking forward to reading William Golding's Lord of the Flies because I've seen people read and praise it ever since I was in college which was probably six or seven years ago. Some of my classmates read it for their English class and I'd hear them discuss it, as well. When I see many people read and talk about a certain book, it's not necessary that I have to read the book, but if and when I do end up giving it a go, I have expectations.

Unfortunately, whatever few expectations I had from Lord of the Flie were completely shattered and destroyed because the book was boring, the plot was very, very slow and the story was just put in a manner so complicated that I barely understood what was going on. I will still defend the story and say that it is indeed unique and inspiring, but it would have been so much better had it been put in a simple manner.

I did with this book what I used to do with books that I couldn't really get into but still had to read for my literature class, and it's what I call "zombie reading". Now in this type of reading, I really don't care what's going on because 1) I'm not understanding it no matter how hard I try to concentrate, 2) the writing is too boring or the pace of the novel, too slow and 3) nothing seems to work. All three categories applied to Lord of the Flie, but I still continued reading it because I didn't want to give up and I kept hoping that it would get better.

I totally see why this book is called a classic and I bet I would have liked it if I had someone to guide me with it and with whom I could discuss it, which is why I feel that this book is great for literature class. But clearly, it wasn't for me. I do wish I had liked it more and been able to see what thousands others have seen in it, but I didn't. And I hope that's okay.
