Review- When You Were Here by Daisy Whitney

Goodreads Summary:

Filled with humor, raw emotion, a strong voice, and a brilliant dog named Sandy Koufax, When You Were Here explores the two most powerful forces known to man-death and love. Daisy Whitney brings her characters to life with a deft touch and resonating authenticity.

Danny's mother lost her five-year battle with cancer three weeks before his graduation-the one day that she was hanging on to see.

Now Danny is left alone, with only his memories, his dog, and his heart-breaking ex-girlfriend for company. He doesn't know how to figure out what to do with her estate, what to say for his Valedictorian speech, let alone how to live or be happy anymore.

When he gets a letter from his mom's property manager in Tokyo, where she had been going for treatment, it shows a side of his mother he never knew. So, with no other sense of direction, Danny travels to Tokyo to connect with his mother's memory and make sense of her final months, which seemed filled with more joy than Danny ever knew. There, among the cherry blossoms, temples, and crowds, and with the help of an almost-but-definitely-not Harajuku girl, he begins to see how it may not have been ancient magic or mystical treatment that kept his mother going. Perhaps, the secret of how to live lies in how she died.

REVIEW:

Aw, this book was... *opens/ spreads arms/ hands as wide as they can possibly go* THAT good!  It was SO good. But then again, when I first saw the cover and judged the book by it's cover, good is what it was going to be and the best part is that it didn't disappoint. At all.
Wow. Wow, wow, wow. I am in awe of Daisy Whitney's When You Were Here and I can't even begin to describe how wonderful the story is.
Danny's mom loses her five year long fight against cancer just a few weeks before her son's graduation, an event she was looking forward to and very much wanted to be part of.
Danny's dad's last words to his family were that he will see them again soon but he never returns as he dies in an accident. Danny's adopted sister Laini, daddy's little girl, leaves the family when her dad dies to find her true blood and roots in China.
It won't take rocket science to figure out that Danny is now alone and lonely. All he wants is someone, anyone who will be with him and love him. He was such a darling and sweetheart who I adored from the very first chapter until the end.
Along the journey that Danny takes to Tokyo to decide what to do with his mom's apartment in the city, to find out more about his mom, her last years of struggle, her belief in Dr. Takahashi's magical medicine, all I wanted was the best for him. I loved seeing Tokyo via this book and it was such a  fresh and lively set up.
Danny isn't a broken, disturbed or sad boy. Or at least he doesn't show his unhappiness. He is funny, warm and really sweet. All he wishes is to relive his mom's fondest memories, keep his dad's methodology and teachings alive in his day to day life and find peace and solace with everything that he's had to go through.
Books about cancer usually leave you in a contemplative mood and When You Were Here has left me there too.
Danny's mom was a wonder woman whose memories were filled with colour and full of life. His dad was a gentleman and a fun-loving person. His sister Laini was something else altogether and was nice in her own way.
Danny's mom's best friend Kate takes care of Danny and her daughter Holland is Danny's crush and girlfriend. Both Kate and Holland were amazing women. When in Tokyo, Danny meets Kana, a super friendly, lively and joyous girl who goes on to become his best friend and confidante.
And Danny's dog Sandy Koufax! Dogs and I go a long way. I don't remember a time without a pet dog and that's because there's never been a time when we didn't have a dog at home. So I can really understand the  humble, close and loyal relationship between man and dog. God, Sandy Koufax was so adorable and sweet!
The story of the characters in When You Were Here is the epitome of the phrase "Everything happens for a reason." Each character has reasons for why they did whatever they did and it was mesmerising and beautiful to read about it.
Author Daisy Whitney's writing is very pretty and Danny's point of view was a wonder to read. This book was full of warmth, emotions and all things wonderful and I loved. Every. Bit. Of. It. It has the right amount of all ingredients that make a book a good read for me- family, love, life, tons of feelings and emotions and messed up stuff thrown in here and there.
God. Wow. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful- that's what this book is.

Review- Come What May by Faith Sullivan

Goodreads Summary:

Adam is through with love.

He unravels blaming himself for what happened with Katie.

His final moments with her echo through his nightmares.

She owns him body and soul.

To dull the pain, Adam invites a string of women into his bed. Fueled by alcohol and desperation, his meaningless hook-ups provide little comfort. When he closes his eyes, it's Katie he sees.

The only one who helps to ease his guilt somewhat is Jada. But as his new ambulance partner, Adam considers her off limits. He doesn't want to get seriously involved with anyone, much less her. Yet he can't stop fantasizing about the feel of her caramel skin against his.

Despite his intentions, Adam's bond with Jada deepens as they respond to a series of emotional calls. Their mutual attraction becomes undeniable. But how can he give his heart to Jada when it still belongs to Katie?

REVIEW:

Just like I felt with the first book of the Heartbeat series, Heartbeat (my review of which can be read here), I don't know what to feel about Come What May. With both these books by author Faith Sullivan, I know that no matter how much time I give myself to think and ponder over them, it's just not going to be enough. I love the way Faith's books end but they leave me feeling confused, empty and utterly shocked, in a good way because I'm weird that way.
Come What May starts out with Adam starting a new life after losing Katie. He completely changes his life by opting for drinking and casual sex, something I would never have imagined the Adam from Heartbeat go for. He was just too good to go that way. But things change. He is broken, depressed and sad. He keeps seeing Katie everywhere and he can't seem to have a hold on himself. I really don't know if I love or hate Adam in
Come What May  There were so many times when I wanted to comfort him, but then some dumb things that he did at some point came up and changed the whole way in which I look at him. Ugh. I don't know. All I can say is that the Adam from Come What May is very different from the Adam we met in Heartbeat. The only common aspect to both is his love for Katie. And the fact that paramedics is still his life.
And that's where he meets Jada. Jada was a nice girl who was just as broken as Adam and had a past as heartbreaking and devastating as his. There were times when even she got on my nerves, but the poor girl has seen a lot of trouble and my heart cried out for her. I loved how she remained casual with Adam even though she had really strong feelings for him. She tried to put it all away and I was always with her when she was trying to teach Adam a lesson in a subtle way. She truly helped Adam heal and I only wish she herself can heal soon too because she a nice girl.
Somehow, when together, Jada and Adam seemed comfortable and easy going. They are both assigned as partners on the ambulance Adam drives and they make for a great team. The romance between the two is just about brewing when something or the other comes up and cools it off. I couldn't help compare Jada and Katie and I really have no idea which girl I want Adam to end up with in I Am Yours. All I can say is that I am really looking forward to the final book.
Author Faith Sullivan's writing is again very smooth and simple. I love the length of her books and how details are given without making it sound very boring. The alternating points of views were essential and made both Jada and Adam's sides of the story understandable and real.
Come What May was very emotional and I experienced an assortment of feelings while reading it. Even though I loved the way Heartbeat ended, I still am not sure of my final thoughts on it. After Come What May  however, I've understood Adam better and the book itself was a notch higher than the first book, so the fact that the books are getting better and better gives me immense hope for a nice ending to the stories of each of the characters.

Blog Tour- Review + Giveaway Officer Off Limits by Tessa Bailey

Summary-

His need to possess her is non-negotiable.

Story Brooks’ fiancé just called off their wedding two weeks before the happy day. As if that isn't bad enough, her semi-estranged father, an infamous NYPD hostage negotiator, has suffered a heart attack. Not wanting to examine her lack of emotion over the broken engagement, she hops on a plane to reconnect with her father before it’s too late.

Playboy hostage negotiator Daniel Chase has never, not once, been refused by a woman, so when a debate over hospital snack foods with a delectable kindergarten teacher ends in flat-out rejection, he makes it his mission to seduce her. His only obstacle? She’s the daughter of his mentor who implicitly forbade Daniel from pursuing her.

Despite her father’s warnings and Daniel’s troubled past, Daniel and Story can’t resist their intense attraction to one another. But when the reason for her fiancé’s abrupt wedding cancellation comes to light, can Story and Daniel's already forbidden relationship survive?

Review-

Officer Off Limits is the third book in Tessa Bailey's Line Of Duty series. The previous two books in the series are Protecting What's His and His Risk To Take but Officer Off Limits can easily be read as a stand alone novel. I had thoroughly enjoyed the previous two books and I enjoyed Officer Off Limits just as much. They make up for steamy books which just make you wanna curl up and read.

Officer Off Limits starts off with Story Brooks' fiance calling off their wedding. She is sad and heartbroken. Just when she thinks things couldn't get worse she gets a call notifying her that her dad has suffered a heart attack. So Story hops on a plane and goes to her father. What I love about Tessa Bailey's books are the feisty heroines. Story is strong and determined. She isn't afraid to speak her mind and that's what I loved about her.

Then we have playboy hostage negotiator Daniel Chase. When he meets Story Brooks, who just happens to be his mentor's daughter and totally off limits he is completely smitten away. He's pulled in by her innocence and vulnerability. Daniel, who has always prided himself on his control cannot control himself where Story is concerned. All the rational thinking goes right out the window. It was amazing to see how passionate Daniel was.

When Story and Daniel meet there is an instant spark of attraction. There is what you would call insta love but it is so well portrayed that the whole situation seems actually believable. Tessa Bailey always writes hot intimate scenes. Hot is an understatement actually. I devoured the chemistry between Daniel and Story. The witty conversations, the dialogues, the banter made the book unputdownable.

I loved Matt and Brent and I hope each one of them gets a book. Especially Brent, I hope he ends up with whom I think he'll end up with. Officer Off Limits made me swoon, laugh, sigh and left me happily grinning by the end of it. Tessa Bailey is an amazing author who knows how to reel you into her stories. I would definitely recommend picking up Officer Off Limits or any of the Line Of Duty novels if you're a romance fan.
