Blog Tour+Review+Giveaway- Rock Addiction by Nalini Singh

Summary-

A bad boy wrapped in a sexy, muscled, grown-up package might be worth a little risk…

Molly Webster has always followed the rules. After an ugly scandal tore apart her childhood and made her the focus of the media’s harsh spotlight, she vowed to live an ordinary life. No fame. No impropriety. No pain. Then she meets Zachary Fox, a tattooed bad boy rocker with a voice like whiskey and sin, and a touch that could become an addiction.

A one-night stand with the hottest rock star on the planet, that’s all it was meant to be…

Fox promises scorching heat and dangerous pleasure, coaxing Molly to extend their one-night stand into a one-month fling. After that, he’ll be gone forever, his life never again intersecting with her own. Sex and sin and sensual indulgence, all with an expiration date. No ties, no regrets. Too late, Molly realizes it isn’t only her body that’s become addicted to Fox, but her heart…

Review-

I am a HUGE Nalini Singh fan. I have devoured her Psy-changeling and Guild Hunter series and loved every bit of it. So when I found out that she had written a contemporary rock star romance I was jumping with joy. The happy dance continued when I got to read an Advanced Readers Copy through Netgalley. It is no surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed Rock Addiction.

Molly Webster is a librarian. After a horrific scandal in her childhood she has always followed the rules and tried to be good in every way. I really liked Molly. She was a sweet and simple girl but she couldn't deny the primal attraction between Fox and her. I also liked that Molly had her insecurities and didn't always believe how she could keep the rock star's attention all to herself.

Then we have Fox. He is the lead singer in a band called as Schoolboy Choir. Fox was an alpha male to the core. Once he set his eyes on Molly he didn't turn back. He used every trick in the book to pursue her and  make her his. Fox also had a temper and I thought that his impatience where some things were concerned just added to the rock star image.

Fox and Molly have a hell lot of chemistry from the first page itself. Things move very quickly and what was supposed to be a one night stand soon turns into so much more. I liked how Molly and Fox were quick in their physical relationship but slowly built their trust emotionally. They both tried to help each other with their issues and stood by each other. There was also some angst in this book which usually is very much toned down in Nalini's books. But in this case it made Fox and Molly's relationship more passionate.

I also loved all the members of the band. I hope David, Noah and Abe all gets books as each one of them has a strong personality. The cast of supporting characters was amazing and we can already see some relationships brewing. I'm overall super happy with this book and though I can't say it compares to her phenomenal paranormal books it was still a very good read.

DNF Review- Twelve Years A Slave by Solomon Northup

Goodreads Summary:

This unforgettable memoir was the basis for the Academy Award-winning film 12 Years a Slave. This is the true story of Solomon Northup, who was born and raised as a freeman in New York. He lived the American dream, with a house and a loving family - a wife and two kids. Then one day he was drugged, kidnapped, and sold into slavery in the deep south. These are the true accounts of his twelve hard years as a slave - many believe this memoir is even more graphic and disturbing than the film. His extraordinary journey proves the resiliency of hope and the human spirit despite the most grueling and formidable of circumstances.

REVIEW:

*NOTE: We (The Readdicts) received a copy of Twelve Years A Slave by Solomon Northup from Pirates in exchange for an honest review. We thank the publishing house for the book!

When we first received an email about Twelve Years A Slave, I was extremely intrigued by the book since at that time, I was reading Edward Said's Orientalism for my literature class and studying the theory as well. So this book seemed like the perfect way to apply the theory to a literary work that isn't fiction. For some reason or the other- and the reason being studies mostly- I kept putting the book aside although ideally, I would have loved to read it while doing orientalism. When I finally picked up the book to read, it was too late, I guess.

When I went to Quebec for an exchange programme, the in-flight services provided by our airlines had the movie Twelve Years A Slave and I decided to watch it after having watched actors from the film go receive their Oscars for the same. I didn't like the movie much but I did find it interesting. It was sad and devastating, and I wouldn't really know how much of the book was taken to the big screen. I had the book with me at that time as well, but I already said, I never got to it since I had other stuff to do.

ANYWAY. I guess I've gone off topic enough and it's time I finally get to the review instead of just blabbering about random stuff that no one even cares about.

So, the book. Well, first off, I did not like the pace of it. It was way too slow for my liking without much happening. I understand why there was a lack of dialogue and a heavy dose of description, but for me, it was too boring. I admit that the binary opposition of master/ slave has been the most interesting relationship since it's nothing but a human thinking another human as savage and using him for his own benefit. But all that aside, the problem I have is not with the story. I don't want to talk about it since I'm not really sure I am capable of doing it.

I was under the impression that I was reading Twelve Years A Slave when I received an email from Goodreads asking me to update my progress on the book and telling me that it's been 50 days since I started reading it. 50 days. Can you imagine that? 50 days is almost a month and a half. And I read only 90 pages of the book. And in that time, I didn't even read any other paperback since I knew I was reading Twelve Years A Slave and it's better to finish one book before getting on to the next. Honestly, it's not the book's fault. It is mine. I did not read it on time and when I was in the mood for it. So if anyone is to be blamed, it's me. I would have liked to just sit down one day and finish off the book, but somewhere, I know it's not going to happen and I don't want to waste time reading something that I won't exactly prefer to read otherwise. What should be noted is that whatever I read, I found alright. It was profound and I learnt a lot of stuff here and there. But it's taking too long and I've lost interest, honestly.

I know there are people who will love this book, and I would have as well, but no. It's too time consuming (as if my current pile of books doesn't haunt me enough) and I must close one door to open the next. Sorry, book.

Author Interview- Kajol Aikat (Unsocial Amigos)

Hi, guys! Today, we have with us author of Unsocial Amigos, Aikat for an interview. Before we get on to the main interview, let me give you some details about the author and the book.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

A story that lives inside a diary written by Raj Roy- a young teenage boy, about the most eventful stage of his life- the period of his companionship with his love lady Puja Chabbra. Raj is carefree and mischievous and Puja is contrary to what Raj is. They are college mates who eventually become best friends. And, with the passage of time they eventually fall for each other. Everything goes just perfect, until they get into a live- in relationship in a small city like Ranchi, where people have more interest in looking and judging into other’s collars than to mind their own. They (people) are quite conservative about liberal actions. Though Raj and Puja consider their relationship no less pure than marriage, people out there take this the other way round. That is, Raj and Puja are pretty much uncouth and uncivilized to the people out there. Their own college becomes critic of their relationship while the rest of the society is no less travailing. Moreover, adding to their misery, they find no support from their families and find one of their friends betraying them. Eventually, all of this leads to their suspension from college, restrictions from home, breakage of fragile relationships, and finally, a severe incident of trauma with Puja! This relationship makes Raj and Puja go into turmoil of hardships, trauma , accidents and a sacrifice that ends up having their lives changed forever!

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

Hi Aikat! Welcome to The Readdicts. It’s great to have you with us on our blog today and we hope you have a nice time answering the following questions we have for you.

1)  Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Aikat: Starting by name, it’s Kajol Aikat, though I prefer using Aikat as my pen name. I’m twenty at present. At a personal level, most of the stuff I like are somewhat related to art and literature. Sketching and writing are two things I can’t leave doing. Doing photography, watching (good) movies, and reading (all sorts of) books act as favourite pastimes. Also, I am a huge comic book nerd. On religious grounds, I’m agnostic.

2)  Tell us about your book, Unsocial Amigos.

Aikat: Unsocial Amigos is a story of our times where two friends- Raj and Puja eventually go into a live-in relationship in a small city like Ranchi and face social discrimination regarding the same. The story ends up telling how their relationship ends up changing their whole lives forever. In short, Unsocial Amigos is a love story at core, which eventually puts forward the narrow perspective of people regarding the live-in relationships. Along with that, the story also tells that how love can change a person and teach him to live selflessly.

3)   What inspired you to write your book?

Aikat: Well, many things do. This story has seen my growth as a writer and as a person. I used to write short stories and poems. A few life events and issues acted as a driving force to sit and pen down a romance fiction novel. Eventually, many people, especially Mrs. Sampa Dutta, my high school English mentor, motivated me further to work on the script. So, all of those somehow combined as an inspiration.

4)  Are any of the characters in your book inspired by someone you know or are they complete results of your imagination?

Aikat: Yes, there are. For instance, the female protagonist, i.e., Puja, is. Having said that, the story has nothing to do with my personal life or anyone related to it. It remains completely imaginary and fictional.

5)  What kind of research went into writing your book?

Aikat: After having decided to write a romance fiction on live-in relationship, I went to contact a few such couples via social media. I also contacted concerned people who could give me proper knowledge about the same. Also, I referred to news and articles for learning about legal aspects of live-in relationships in India.

6)  Did you always want to become an author or was it something that you eventually thought of or realised? If not an author, what did you want to be when growing up?

Aikat: Writing and drawing were my childhood interests. So becoming a published author was no less than a dream-come-true. If not an author, I would have been carrying on with my MBA career then.

7)  Tell us why readers should pick up your book.

Aikat: This book is a love story, and I hope readers will enjoy reading it. Along with that this is an important book as the story itself delivers a social message. I tried my best to bind up a story that can touch hearts and garner love. And yes, readers won’t get bored while reading it, I bet!

8)  What advice would you give to aspiring young writers?

Aikat: A writer evolves only when he keeps on writing. So, read more, write more.

9)  What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Aikat: Watching movies, listening songs, reading books or sketching stuff.

10)  Give us glimpse into any normal day of your life.

Aikat: Normal days are usually, well, normal- I wake up, eat, go to college, banter with friends, watch movies on my laptop, reading books or comics, write and draw things, do Facebook or  surf internet and when the day ends, go to sleep.

Thank you so much for taking the time out to answer our questions, Aikat. We wish you all the very best for everything you do in life.

I hope you guys liked this post just as much I did. I also hope that you are now looking forward to Aikat's book. We'd like to thank Aikat for doing an interview with us. And thank you, readers, for stopping by!

Review- It's Complex! by Shoma Narayanan

Summary-

Jai, an aspiring scriptwriter and Nikita, the consummate modern working woman, live in the same residential high-rise in Mumbai. One night, the two have a dramatic encounter, when Jai rescues Nikita from a near-fatal accident and then offers to moonlight as her driver. Thus begins a tempestuous romance which takes many unexpected twists and turns. Jai, desperate for a break in Bollywood, enters a love-story contest in Nikita’s name. Will this rash act on his part lead to a nasty break-up or will the two let their barriers fall and discover each other anew?

Find out how the young couple navigates their complicated relationship even as they deal with the many colorful characters that enter their lives. An action-packed urban drama played out in a swanky housing society, its Complex is also a heartfelt story about what happens to seemingly sorted people when they face major choices in life.

Review-

I have read several books by Shoma Narayanan before and I really liked them so I was super excited when I found out that she has a new book out called It's Complex. Unlike all her previous books which were Mills and Boon romances, It's Complex is not exactly a love story but an amalgamation of numerous story lines and characters.

Jai is an aspiring author. He has left his family to pursue his dreams and come to Mumbai. When Jai rescues Nikita, he has no idea how tangled up their lives are gonna get. I liked Jai. He was different and a little bit mysterious in the beginning. I would have loved being more in his head but there were a lot of point of views which didn't give him as much page time.

Then we have Nikita. She doesn't apologize for being brash and open and that is something I really liked about her. Nikita and Jai can feel the attraction between them but they completely deny it. Also, what the summary doesn't indicate is that there is a parallel story of Shilpa and Anuj going on which is equally important.

Every one of them has something going on in their lives. Mix in nosy relatives, interfering neighbors, unexpected exes and a bunch of other people and things just become more complicated. What I liked about It's Complex was that even though there were a ton of characters, it was easy to keep a track of them. Each one had their own personality and I definitely didn't get confused.

Shoma Narayanan's writing is really engaging and fast paced which made me fly through the book. It is basically just about people figuring out what they want from their lives while trying to keep up with Mumbai. I liked It's Complex!

Easter, raised by a neglectful single mom, keeps to herself and admires Weston Gates from afar. The other Erins, Erin "Alder" Alderman and Erin "Sonny" Masterson are the darlings of the community: daughters of the two wealthiest families in town, best friends, cheerleaders, and everything Easter isn't--and they never let her forget it. Alder has even claimed Weston since the 8th grade.

Weston is a well-liked star athlete, and the son of two prominent attorneys. He struggles daily with the pressures of living up to his family name and secretly empathizes with Easter's feeling that she belongs somewhere else; in a different life. Not until he begins sneaking nights out with Easter does he gain the courage to buck expectations and acknowledge his feelings ... both for his future, and for her.

A shocking tragedy rocks the tiny town, and Easter's life is turned upside down in the best way possible. But when the truth is revealed and everything she thinks she wanted falls into her lap, life only becomes more complicated.
