Review- Once Upon a Maiden Lane by Elizabeth Hoyt

Summary-

Miss Mary Whitsun is far too intelligent to fall for the rakish charms of a handsome aristocrat. But when the gentleman in question approaches her in a bookshop, mistaking her for his fiancée, Lady Johanna Albright, the flirtatious encounter only raises more questions. Could Mary, a servant raised in a St Giles orphanage, actually be Lady Joanna's long-lost twin sister? If so, Mary has been betrothed since birth—to the rakishly handsome artistocrat himself.

Henry Collins, Viscount Blackwell, is far too intrigued by Mary to let her go so easily. He's drawn to her sharp mind, indomitable spirit, and the fiery way in which she dismisses him—ladies simply don't dismiss Lord Blackwell. But as Mary makes her first hesitant steps into society, she can't help but wonder if she truly has a place in Henry's world—or in his heart.

Review-

Elizabeth Hoyt writes some of the most beautiful historical romances. If you are a newbie where historical romances are concerned I'd definitely suggest starting with Elizabeth Hoyt's Maiden Lane series. Once Upon a Maiden Lane is the second to last novella in the long running Maiden Lane series. I'm sad to see it end but it will always remain one of the best historical romance series I've ever read.

This is the story of Mary and Henry. Mary Whitsun works as a servant in St.Giles. She was an orphan found on the doorstep but she was raised by the Makepeace family. Now Mary is all grown up. I loved Mary. She was a smart lady with her head on her shoulders. She was intelligent and not afraid to speak her mind. In a society where women were treated so delicately Mary was strong.

When Mary finds out that she could be Lady Joanna's long lost sister her world flips upside down. Now she's the daughter of an aristocrat and she has herself a fiance. Henry, Viscount Blackwell is intrigued by Mary from the moment he sees her. She is unlike any woman he's met before and the more he gets to know her the more he wants her. Henry was a responsible man who took his duties seriously. He wanted to make his family happy even if it meant sacrificing his own happiness in the process.

Mary and Henry are to have an arranged marriage and they were great together. There is a twist in the plot as nothing less can be expected of Elizabeth Hoyt but there is no unnecessary drama or angst. As always is the case with novellas I was left wanting more but overall Once Upon a Maiden Lane was very satisfactory. A perfect feel good novella.

Review-

Duke of Desire is the twelfth, yes twelfth book in the Maiden Lane series. It makes me feel bittersweet to say that this is going to be the last book in the Maiden Lane series. Before I continue on with the review I'd like to say that Elizabeth Hoyt is one of the most amazing authors and she is one of my favourite historical romance authors. I can't wait to read more from her and the entire Maiden Lane series is one of her best works. Now, getting back to Duke of Desire, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Let's start with the Duke in question, the Duke of Dyemore. Raphael is scarred and cynical. He does not mingle in society nor does he care what the society thinks of him. Raphael is on a mission to bring down the Lords of Chaos and destroy them and he will do anything to achieve that. What he does not expect is to fall for Lady Iris. I really liked Raphael. The poor man had a horrible childhood and suffered abuse from the hands of a loved one. This makes him question love and everything along with it.

Lady Iris Jordan does not expect to be kidnapped by the Lords of Chaos nor does she expect to be rescued by Rapheal and then marry him. Duke of Desire follows the classic example of marriage of convenience and it works so well for Iris and Raphael. Iris was a lady who'd been through a lot. She just wanted a husband and a companion whom she could love and cherish. Iris was determined and strong and sometimes stubborn- basically just what Raphael needed.

The romance between Iris and Raphael was swoon worthy. They were sweet together and Iris was definitely not hesitant to speak her mind. Raphael was protective and though he tried to keep his heart out of the relationship he failed. We also get to see a few familiar faces from the previous books here.

One thing to be noted is that Duke of Desire has a much darker undertone as compared to some of the previous Maiden Lane books. It gives the book and its characters more depth. We can see the meaning behind their actions and the circumstances which led them to be the people they are in the present. Elizabeth Hoyt's writing is smooth and highly engaging. Overall, I really enjoyed Duke of Desire.

Iris tasted of red wine—the red wine she must have drunk at dinner—and all the reasons he shouldn’t do this fled his mind. A vital chain broke in his psyche and everything he’d held back, everything he’d restrained with all his might, was suddenly set free. He surged into her mouth, desperate for the feel, for the taste of her, his wife, his duchess, his Iris. She was soft and sweet and warm and he wanted to devour her. To seize her and hold her and never let her go. The deep unfathomable well of his urges toward her frightened him, and he knew that if she became aware of them, they would frighten her as well.
But that was the thing—she wasn’t aware of them. She thought she was simply consummating their marriage or some such rot, God help them both.
She gripped his naked arms and the beast within him shuddered and stretched, claws scraping against the ground.
Dear God, he wanted this woman.
But he had to remember—to keep that human part of his mind awake and alive—that he mustn’t seed her.
Must never do as his cursed father had done.
He broke from her mouth, feeling the pulse of his cock against his breeches, and trailed his lips across her cheek to her ear. “Come with me, sweet girl.”
She blinked up at him, wide blue-gray eyes a little dazed.
He covered her mouth again before she could speak—either to consent or decline—and drew her slowly backward, step by step, toward the bed, until he hit it with the backs of his legs. He broke the kiss, looking down at her, her wet ruby lips parted, her cheeks flushed pink.
She looked edible.
“Raphael,” she whispered, his name on her lips like a plea, and something within him broke.
This wasn’t what he wanted. This wasn’t right. But it was the only thing possible and it would have to suffice because it was all he could do.
And trying to resist was killing him.
He traced a hand up her arm, over her shoulder, to her neck, and from there touched her bound golden hair. “Will you take down your hair for me?”
She gasped—a small, quick inhalation—and nodded.
He watched as she raised her arms, her stormy eyes locked on his, and withdrew the pins from her hair one by one until the heavy mass fell like a curtain around her shoulders. He bent then and gathered the locks in his hands, burying his face in her neck, inhaling her.
His woman.
He felt her tremble against him and then her fingers speared through his hair. “Raphael.”
He lifted his head.
Her hands fell away and she began undressing, her head bent down as she unhooked her bodice. He saw that her fingers fumbled and he knew that a better man would turn aside. Would give her privacy to collect herself and disrobe with modesty.
But he wasn’t such a man. He wanted all of her—her mistakes and her private moments, her shame and her worries—everything she held back from the rest of the world. As he wanted this. This moment of fumbling.
This moment of intimacy.
She pulled the bodice from her arms. Untied her skirts and let them pool around her feet before kicking them aside. Glanced up at him and then worked at the laces to her stays.
Her unbound hair fell over her shoulders, nearly to her waist, thick and swaying gently as she moved.
Beautiful.
She was beautiful.
She pulled her loosened stays off over her head and stood in chemise, stockings, and shoes. The tips of her breasts peeked out from beneath the thin cloth.
She began to bend for her shoes, but he stopped her. “No. Let me.”
He grasped her by the waist and lifted her to the bed.
Carefully he drew off her slippers, letting them drop to the hardwood floor before running his hand up her left calf. The room was so quiet he could hear each breath she drew. She watched him as he reached under her chemise, into that warm spot behind her knee, tugging at the ribbon of her garter.
Her breath hitched.
He glanced up at her as he found bare skin. Hot, so hot under her skirt. He could almost imagine he smelled her, standing between her bent legs. He pulled the first stocking off and moved to her other foot, smoothing his thumb over her arch, over that high instep, that sweet, delicate ankle. The curve of her calf—one of the loveliest curves in nature—elegant and perfect. Someday he’d like to draw her nude.
The faint, almost inaudible whisper as he pulled the ribbon off raised the hairs on the back of his neck. His nostrils flared and he couldn’t wait any longer. He lifted her bodily, moving her farther up on the bed, placing her head and shoulders against the pillows, and then pushed up her chemise, crawling between her spread thighs and settling to enjoy what he’d found.
There. There she was, her pretty, pretty pink cunny, all coral lips and wispy dark-blond curls. He hiked her trembling legs over his arms, ignoring her gasp of shocked surprise. He glanced up once and saw wide, wondering eyes gazing back at him. Her gentlemanly first husband had evidently never done this to her.
More fool he.

Review-

Duke of Pleasure is the 11th, yes you read that right, the 11th book in the Maiden Lane series. I don't know how Elizabeth Hoyt manages to do it but each book in her Maiden Lane series seems just as unique and refreshing as the previous one. There are no repetitive plots or the same old story lines. And I do enjoy every single book she releases in this series. Duke of Pleasure was a solid good read for me.

This is the story of Duke of Kyle, Hugh Fitzroy. Hugh or Kyle as most people call him has been appointed with the task to find and finish the Lords of Chaos. They need to be put to an end so that their perverseness can be stopped and no more innocents are harmed. For this, Kyle takes the help of Alf while being rescued and attracted with the very womanly Ghost of St.Giles. What he doesn't know is that they both are one and the same. I really liked Kyle. His head and heart was in the right place.

Then we have Alf. Alf who fools everyone into thinking that she is a boy. I have always liked Alf's character from the previous books. She is courageous and smart. She knows how to handle her circumstances. Alf really wants to help the Duke of Kyle. It doesn't help that she is extremely attracted to him. She knows the divide between them is too large but she still handled it so well.

Elizabeth Hoyt is a master of historical romances. We don't get to spend the entire book with Alf posing as a man, thank god. Alf and Kyle's story moves at a steady pace, a believable pace. They obviously share chemistry and Alf is just what Kyle needs. Kyle is hesitant to trust in his love but he is a smart man so he figures things out quickly.

I also liked how we got a nice story line of Alf with Kyle's children. I think the bond they shared was strong on its own. It was also realistic how the boys were more accepting of Alf as a boy rather than Alf as a woman. Everything turns out well in the end, obviously. We also get to see the beginnings of the next book which I am really looking forward to. This was a good read for me.

Review- Once upon a Moonlit Night by Elizabeth Hoyt

Summary-

From New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Hoyt comes a delightful Maiden Lane novella that begins once upon a moonlit night—and ends wickedly, wonderfully ever after...

Hippolyta Royle is running for her life. Pursued by hounds on a cold rainy night, the heiress flags down a passing carriage and throws herself at the mercy of the coach's occupant. Whoever this handsome traveler may be, he is her only hope to escape a terrible fate. But should he agree to escort her to safety, he's in for much more than he bargained for.

At first Matthew Mortimer doesn't believe Hippolyta's story, that she's a fabulously wealthy heiress who's been kidnapped. He assumes she's a beggar, an actress, or worse. But once his new travel companion washes the mud from her surprisingly lovely face, and they share a breathtaking kiss, there is no turning back.

Review-

The Maiden Lane series by Elizabeth Hoyt is one of the few historical romance series I actualy follow from release to release. Unlike others where I tend to gobble up the entire series after all books are out. Yes, I am impatient like that. Once Upon a Moonlit Night is book #10.5 in the Maiden Lane series. This is a novella but it can definitely be read as a stand alone. In general I am not a big fan of novellas but I still quite liked this one.

Once Upon a Moonlit Night is the story of Hippolyta Royle. If you've been following the series you know that we've met her in the past few books. She is half Indian and that makes her really unique but not always accepted in the English society. The novella starts off with Hippolyta running for her life when she meets Matthew Mortimer, her rescuer, even if he isn't exactly willing.

I liked Hippolyta as a heroine. She was exotic on her own way. She was at a vulnerable point in her life but she is still strong and determined. Matthew on the other hand is just back from his travels. He doesn't believe that Hippolyta is a wealthy heiress but he feels protective about the woman. Matthew was a nice hero. Even though he doesn't want to fall for Hippolyta he does. But as is the nature of novellas we don't get to see every single nuance of the characters in the book.

Elizabeth Hoyt writes fabulous romances and the one in this book was just as nice. With the perfect mixture of sexy and sweet Matthew and Hippolyta come together. Throw that in with marriage and a really sweet epilogue and you have Once Upon a Moonlit Lane. I am incapable of giving a novella more than 3.5 stars as I am always left wanting more and the same is the case with this one. But I still think this is one of the better novellas out there with a semblance of a plot. This was a nice read.

Review- Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt

Summary-

A MAN OF SIN

Devastatingly handsome. Vain. Unscrupulous. Valentine Napier, the Duke of Montgomery, is the man London whispers about in boudoirs and back alleys. A notorious rake and blackmailer, Montgomery has returned from exile, intent on seeking revenge on those who have wronged him. But what he finds in his own bedroom may lay waste to all his plans.

A WOMAN OF HONOR

Born a bastard, housekeeper Bridget Crumb is clever, bold, and fiercely loyal. When her aristocratic mother becomes the target of extortion, Bridget joins the Duke of Montgomery's household to search for the incriminating evidence-and uncovers something far more dangerous.

A SECRET THAT THREATENS TO DESTROY THEM BOTH

Astonished by the deceptively prim-and surprisingly witty-domestic spy in his chambers, Montgomery is intrigued. And try as she might, Bridget can't resist the slyly charming duke. Now as the two begin their treacherous game of cat and mouse, they soon realize that they both have secrets-and neither may be as nefarious-or as innocent-as they appear . . .

Review-

There are very few historical romance series that I actually keep up with. Mostly, I go the contemporary route. But Elizabeth Hoyt is one author who writes beautiful stories. Duke of Sin is the tenth, yes you read that right, the tenth book in the Maiden Lane series and this series shows no signs of stopping. I'm still just as interested in Hoyt's characters as I was during book one and I enjoyed Duke of Sin just as much as its predecessors.

Our hero is Valentine Napier, the Duke of Montgomery. Valentine is everything one hates in a man. He is vain, unscrupulous and devastatingly handsome. His most preferred form of talking is through black mail. You'd think that you'd hate Val but some how during the course of the book you start understanding him. As you come to know his childhood and his past you can see that he has never known what real love is.

Our heroine is Bridget Crumb. Bridget is the housekeeper. She is smart and capable. As independent as a woman can be during those times. I loved Bridget. She obviously had intentions of her own for working in the Duke's house but she meant no harm to the Duke. As she begins to talk to Val she sees that what everyone thinks about him is not always true. I think Bridget made for a perfect partner for Valentine, balancing him out.

Elizabeth Hoyt writes amazing chemistry. I loved all the conversations between Val and Bridget. They were hilarious and witty. There is by no means insta love or anything of that sort in this book. Bridget goes from hating Valentine to understanding him to loving him. Their relationship progresses gradually, at a steady pace which makes it very real.

I also loved all the supporting characters in Duke of Sin. Elizabeth Hoyt makes a nice base for the next book and we get to meet a few new people. What I like about the Maiden Lane series is that it is not all romance. There is a plot with a little bit of suspense moving the book as well as the entire series forward. I also loved seeing Asa and Eve from the last book. Overall, Duke of Sin was a great addition to the Maiden Lane series. I would highly recommend this series to fans of historical romances.

Blog Tour- Excerpt+Giveaway- Sweetest Scoundrel by Elizabeth Hoyt

Summary-

SHE'S TAKING CHARGE

Prim, proper, and thrifty, Eve Dinwoody is all business when it comes to protecting her brother's investment. But when she agrees to control the purse strings of London's premier pleasure garden, Harte's Folly, she finds herself butting heads with an infuriating scoundrel who can't be controlled.

HE'S RUNNING THE SHOW

Bawdy and bold, Asa Makepeace doesn't have time for a penny-pinching prude like Eve. As the garden's larger-than-life owner, he's already dealing with self-centered sopranos and temperamental tenors. He's not about to let an aristocratic woman boss him around . . . no matter how enticing she is.

BUT LOVE CONQUERS ALL

In spite of her lack of theatrical experience—and her fiery clashes with Asa—Eve is determined to turn Harte's Folly into a smashing success. But the harder she tries to manage the stubborn rake, the harder it is to ignore his seductive charm and raw magnetism. There's no denying the smoldering fire between them—and trying to put it out would be the greatest folly of all.

               Excerpt-

What do you see when you look at me?”
What did she see when she looked at him?
Eve inhaled, trying and failing to tear her gaze from his.
Mr. Harte sprawled across her dainty settee like aViking marauder in a pillaged Christian church. Hisbroad shoulders took up more than half the width, hisarms lazily draped over the back. His scarlet coat wasspread open, contrasting with the sedate gray-
blueofthe cushions almost shockingly. One long leg was thruststraight before him, the other cocked open and restingon a booted heel. The pose made the apex of his thighsvery . . . obvious . . . and even as she kept her eyes locked onhis she could feel heat rising in her cheeks.
What did she see?
She saw violence and anger, kept under a control that was tenuous at best. She saw power and a strength thatcould hurt her—killher—ifhe so chose. She saw theinnate brutality that was, in larger or smaller part, inall men.
She saw her most terrible fears.
But—andthis was the truly unprecedented part—shesaw more in him. She saw temptation—hertemptation—alluringand frightening at the same time, his virility sostrong it was nearly a visible miasma in the space betweenthem.
She wanted him. Wanted that brash gaze, those long, muscled thighs, that mocking, insulting mouth, and theshoulders that went on forever, big and brawny and so
very, very male.
This was madness—sheknew that intellectually. She’dnever wanted a man before—wasin fact afraid of almostall men, let alone one so obviously, blatantly sexual.
She took a breath, hoping that he couldn’t read all thisfrom her gaze—andknowing it was a lost cause already.
His heavy-liddedgreen eyes were far, far too perceptive.
“I see . . .” She paused to lick suddenly dry lips. “Isee that your hairline is nearly a perfect arc across theexpanse of your forehead. That your eyebrows tilt ever soslightly up at the ends and that the right has a scar throughit. I see that when you are solemn, the outer edges of yourlips reach just to the midpoint of your eyes, but when yousmile, they go beyond the corners. I see that your chinand jaw are almost in classical proportion and that a smallwhite scar forms a comma on your chin just to the right of center.” She finally glanced away from him, breathingheavily, certain that she’d not thrown him off the trackwith her artist’s eye’s impressions. She inhaled again andended, “I see every line of your face, every line’s intersectionand how they relate. That is what I see when I lookat you.”
“And is that all you see? Lines?” His voice was deepand amused.
She chanced a peek.
He still watched her, his gaze utterly unperturbed byher observations about his countenance.
No, she’d not fooled him at all.
She licked her lips again, buying time. “I see,” she saidcarefully, cautiously, “a very self-possessedman.”
Self-possessed,”he drawled. “I’m not sure whatthat means, frankly. It sounds, just a bit, like a coward’sanswer.”
Her gaze flew to his, outraged.
But before she could take him down a peg, he chuckledsoftly. “Tell me, Miss Dinwoody, would you like to knowwhat I see when I look at you?”
She shouldn’t. She really, really shouldn’t.
“Yes,” she blurted, and then winced because she knew well enough what men
thought when they looked at her: ordinary, if they were charitable.Plain if they were not.
She braced herself for mockery, but when she glancedagain at him, his gaze was hot and hard. Certainly notgentle. Certainly not kind. But he wasn’t dismissing her, either.
He looked at her as if they were equals. As if he reallysaw her, a woman to his man.
“I see,” he said, his deep voice musing, “a womanafraid, but fighting her fears. A woman who carriesherself like a queen. A woman who could rule us all, Isuspect.”
She gazed at him, her breath caught in her throat, afraid to exhale and break the spell.
A corner of that wicked mouth tilted up. “And I see awoman who has a deep curiosity. Who wants to feel but is worried—ofherself? Of others?” He shook his head. “I’mnot sure.” He leaned forward slowly, destroying his pose, and she had to fight herself not to scoot her chair away fromhim. “But I think she has a fire banked within her. Maybeit’s only embers now, glowing in the dark, but if tinder wereto be put to those embers . . .” He grinned slowly. Dangerously.“Oh, what a conflagration that would be.”
