Waiting On Wednesday #44

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Frigid by J.Lynn
Publication Date: July 30 2013

Summary-

For twenty-one-year-old Sydney, being in love with Kyler isn't anything new. They'd been best friends ever since he pushed her down on the playground and she made him eat a mud pie. Somewhere over the years, she fell for him and fell hard. The big problem with that? Kyler puts the 'man' in man-whore. He's never stayed with a girl longer than a few nights, and with it being their last year in college, Syd doesn't want to risk their friendship by declaring her love.

Kyler has always put Syd on a pedestal that was too high for him to reach. To him, she's perfect and she's everything. But the feelings he has for her, he's always hidden away or focused on any other female. After all, Kyler will always be the poor boy from the wrong side of tracks, and Syd will always be the one girl he can never have.

But when they're stranded together at a posh ski resort due to a massive Nor'easter, there's nothing stopping their red-hot feelings for each other from coming to the surface. Can their friendship survive the attraction? Better yet, can they survive at all? Because as the snow falls, someone is stalking them, and this ski trip may be a life-changer in more ways than one.

I LOVE J.Lynn and her writing style and can't wait to get my hands on Frigid. Kyler sounds amazing ;)

-Faking It by Cora Carmack

Summary-

Mackenzie “Max” Miller has a problem. Her parents have arrived in town for a surprise visit, and if they see her dyed hair, tattoos, and piercings, they just might disown her. Even worse, they’re expecting to meet a nice, wholesome boyfriend, not a guy named Mace who has a neck tattoo and plays in a band. All her lies are about to come crashing down around her, but then she meets Cade.

Cade moved to Philadelphia to act and to leave his problems behind in Texas. So far though, he’s kept the problems and had very little opportunity to take the stage. When Max approaches him in a coffee shop with a crazy request to pretend to be her boyfriend, he agrees to play the part. But when Cade plays the role a little too well, they’re forced to keep the ruse going. And the more they fake the relationship, the more real it begins to feel.

Review + Giveaway- Jacob Hills by Ismita Tandon Dhankher

Summary-

An unloved woman is a soft target, anyone can hit her, have her.

It’s just another evening at the Tiller’s Club.

Near the bar, Capt. Rana, the Young Officer undergoing training at the War College stands among his course mates, consciously avoiding his pregnant, Muslim wife, Heena. Rumour has it she had forced him to marry her because of the baby.

Saryu, village belle turned modern babe, drink in hand, chats up a YO. Her husband, Maj. Vikram Singh, shoots angry glances at her. She isn’t bothered; the question is, who will she go home with tonight?

Pam and Gary, the flamboyant Sikh couple, chat merrily with the senior officers, charming as ever. Who’d ever guess that they lead the infamous Key Club, an underground swinger couples’ club.

And in one corner stands the Anglo-Indian wife of Maj. George Chandy, Eva, who finds herself at the heart of a murder mystery when a woman’s bleeding body is discovered at the old church under the black cross. The murdered woman’s body is covered with cigarette burns. A six-year-old girl’s wrist is similarly marked. Another little girl shows signs of severe abuse.

Jacob Hills: an army station that houses the War College where young officers receive training. A world of army officers and genteel conversation, of smart men and graceful women. Set in the 1980s – in an India that was at the cusp of tradition and Westernized modernity – this is the story of the ugliness that lies beneath the garb ofJacob Hills’s beauty and sophistication. An ugliness the Chandys find themselves confronted with. Will they uncover the truth behind the woman’s murder? Will their love survive Jacob Hills?

Review-

Jacob Hills by Ismita Tandon Dhankher is a hard hitting book. It takes place in a place called Jacob Hills which is actually a War College. It gives us an insight into what goes on with all the officers in the army. It is set in the 1980s when things were much different from now. I really enjoyed Jacob Hills and found it to be a unique book. Even though it was fiction, the events which took place seemed realistic and harsh.

Jacob Hills moves forward from multiple point of views. Each couple or an officer who is shown in the book are going through their own issues. Each person is hiding behind a facade underneath which lies the ugly truth. All the characters in Jacob Hills had shades of grey. None of them were totally good or bad. Each person had become who he or she was because of the circumstances which life gave them.

The central character in Jacob Hills was Eva though. She is the Anglo-Indian wife of Maj.George Chandy who have just moved to Jacob Hills. Here Eva meets various people and as and how she gets to know them the various dynamics between the people start showing. As many more truths come out, Eva finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery of a woman who had clearly been abused all her life by an officer.

There are several story arcs going on at the same time in Jacob Hills. Some are intertwined with each other whereas some are not. I sometimes found it a little difficult to keep track of each person. The book is filled with issues such as incest and abuse. There is also the swinger's club which is present. Some things portrayed in the book were shocking whereas some were downright disgusting.

Ismita Tandon Dhankher's writing is beautiful. All the descriptions were precise and you really get a feel of what's going on inside each person's head. All the story arcs came to a conclusion by the end and I was happy that nothing was left hanging. Everyone got what they deserved. Jacob Hills is not a very long read but it still manages to stay with you long after you close the last page.

Immortals Of Meluha Read-along: Week 2

Welcome to our stop on the Immortals Of Meluha Read-along.

Today is officially supposed to be Janhvi's day to post but because she was on holiday for a week, she has loads to catch up on and unfortunately, you are stuck with me. J will wrap up the post for us!
As for the post today, I promise to keep you entertained and have fun and not bore you to death. Before we begin, you can catch up or recap the Immortals of Meluha: Week 1 Discussion that happened over at Ankita's blog, Booklok Coffee.

Now, onto the discussion!

Yes, I will honestly admit that I am finding it very difficult to "get" into Immortals Of Meluha by Amish Tripathi but I must also admit that the more I am reading, the more curious I am getting to know more and come to think of it, the book is interesting.
I don't have any grand opinions on the book, so I'll just put down a a list of characters that have me intrigued and plot lines that have me on edge.

The following discussion is based on chapters 8 to 15.

CHARACTERS:

SHIVA: Shiva, our protagonist, is truly a hero and I love his humble and kind nature. He is very sweet. Even though everyone is in awe of the Neelkanth, Shiva still remains grounded. Author Amish had said that one of the best things he likes about Shiva is the immense respect he has for women and it shows in the book. Also, the little snippet we got of the little Shiva was very interesting, touching and difficult to put into my mind.

When reading about Shiva, I can't help but picture the Shiva that we've been shown as kids, which is the Shiva in the picture on the right. But for the movie adaptation of Immortals Of Meluha, they have picked Hrithik Roshan to play Shiva's role and I think Hrithik will do a fab job.

SATI: I like Sati's character as shown by Amish. I was very eager to know what Sati had done to be deemed a Vikarma and I liked getting to know more about that. I like how Sati is fierce, strong and for her time and age, very brave and independent.

BRAHASPATI: The whole conversation between Brahaspati and Shiva about the Somras and it's effects was good to read. I liked how Brahaspati was rational in his beliefs but still believed in miracles. The balance made it real. As he rightly says, "Sometimes one needs a little bit of faith when faced with a difficult situation. Rational answers don't always work. We also need a miracle. You can have scientific miracles too."

PARVATESHWAR: Parvateshwar is practical and smart. He is very protective of Sati, considers her as a daughter and looks after her. He seemed very arrogant and mean to me in the first few chapters but now I really admire his personality.

PANDITJI: The Pandit of Mohan Ja Daro was a sage and his thoughts were worth a good consideration. His views on society and about flexibility and stability being the essentials of a successful society were what got me and I couldn't agree more. But yes, his views on Vikarma bothered me and even then, I liked his determination to strive for the good of the society.

KING OF THE NAGAS: It's too early to have a concrete opinion on him. But when he ordered to save the drowning lady, I knew there was more to it. Maybe, just maybe that is why the second book is called The Secret Of The Nags. Only time will tell us, but I know for a fact that the Nagas will be good guys.

QUESTIONS: What characters intrigued you or irritated you the most?
Is there any particular character you are fond of or would like to get to know better?

PLOT LINES:

SHIVA AND SATI ROMANCE: The chemistry between Sati and Shiva is very visible. It's obvious the two have feelings for each other. I just hope that Sati's dad's intentions of getting the two together don't spoil anything. I love reading about the dance sessions between the two. Even though Sati has to be very careful as a Vikarma, like Krittika says, I really wish she loosens up a bit.

The picture on the left is a collage I made from a few pictures I came across online. They are from a mythological drama series called Devon Ke Dev Mahadev. Sati and Shiva look good, huh?

SUDDHIKARNA: Yeah, this practice, just like with Shiva, is not sitting down well with me either. I want it banned. But I know it's not going to happen.

AGNIPARIKSHA: Oh, I loved it when Sati takes on Tarak. Like I said, she is fierce. The Agnipariksha was action packed and go Sati! I loved that intimate moment Sati and Shiva shared at the end of it.

ACTION: There was lot of action in this part of the book and there's going to be more for sure. For a change, I'm quite enjoying the action.

GEOGRAPHY, HISTORY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE TEXTBOOK REFERENCES: Did you guys feel like you were sitting in your History class while reading about Mohan Ja Daro? I loved the little info we got about South India and the how the seven rivers came to make India the Land of the Seven rivers. Also, the references to Mesopotamia and Egypt took me back to my study of Athenian/ Greek/ Spartan political philosophy.

THE SECRET OF THE NAGAS: I have said it before and I am saying it again, there is something about the Nagas and I really want to know what it is!

QUESTIONS: What parts of the plot did you like most and what parts did you not like?
Are you as eager to know more about the Nagas as I am?

And the main question I have for you...
Are you liking the writing?

Personally, I feel that Amish has tried to keep his writing as simple as possible in order to connect with all sorts of readers (in terms of age). There were many times when the writing made me think if this is really the 19th century. I would have loved to see a more so to say "literary" writing. It would have added authenticity and grandeur.

Okay guys, that's all I have for you. No, wait!
I have a last picture which is something that will interest Ankita! She spoke about the Natraj post in her discussion and I came across a pic where our Shiva himself is in the pose. This one's for you, Ankita!

Okay, now that's really all I got! I hope I didn't take up too much of your time or bore you'll to death with my post. Do let me all your thoughts in the comments below.

Don't forget to stop by Kartik's blog, MeBookGeeko next Sunday for Week 3 Discussion and then back back here again for the final post.

Hope you are enjoying the book and the Read-along!

Review- Deeper We Fall by Chelsea M.Cameron

Summary-

Two years after her best friend was involved in a car accident that caused a traumatic brain injury, Lottie Anders is ready to start her freshman year of college. Ready to move on. Ready to start forgetting the night that ripped her life apart.

Her plans come to a screeching halt when not one, but both brothers responsible for the accident end up back in her life again.

Zack is cruel, selfish and constantly rubbing what happened to her friend in Lottie's face.

Zan is different. He listens to her awkward ramblings. He loves "To Kill a Mockingbird" as much as she does, and his dark eyes are irresistible. His words are few and far between, but when he does speak, she can't help but listen.

The trouble is, Zan was the driver in the accident, and now Lottie's discovered he lied to her about what happened that night. Now she must decide if trusting him again will lead to real forgiveness, or deeper heartache.

Review-

Deeper We Fall was not the first book I'd read by Chelsea M.Cameron. I'd read My Favorite Mistake by her and loved it. So I was expecting a good read and that is exactly what I got. Deeper We Fall changed my expectations which I had built before starting the book and I thoroughly enjoyed losing myself in it.

Lottie, is our heroine. She is trying to move on from the accident which left her best friend a traumatic brain injury. She wants to forget what ripped her life apart and start afresh in college. But things change drastically when the brothers who were responsible for the accident end up back in her life. I really liked Lottie. She was caring and kind and friendly. Her nervous ramblings were cute and after all that she'd been through you just wanted what was best for her.

Then we have the two brothers Zack and Zan. Zack is the cruel one who seems to have already forgotten what happened. Then there's Zan. He is intense and quiet. I was super happy to get his point of view in the book because if not for that we wouldn't have been able to see the depth of his feelings for Lottie. he has got so many issues of his own to deal with but still his love for Lottie remains constant and steady.

The romance is Deeper We Fall is slow burn. Zan and Lottie are not even friends until after the first half of the book. But it was supposed to be that way because both of them have to come to terms with the changes which are happening in their lives. The romance was nice and believable. But I totally saw through the whole secret/lie thing.

One other thing I loved about the book was Lottie's bond with Will, her twin brother. I may be completely biased cause I have a twin brother too but their relationship was portrayed to perfection. The whole twindar which they have and their constant support of each other through thick and thin made me love them more. I loved the whole gang and I'm excited for the next book. Fans of new adult should definitely give Chelsea M.Cameron a try.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

Hi Faith! Welcome to The Readdicts! It's lovely to have you here. Please make yourself at home and we hope you have a nice time answering our very many questions!

1. I know you don't like doing this, Faith, but you're going to have make an exception here and tell us a bit about yourself.

Faith: LOL, okay if I have to :-)
I started reading at age four and basically never stopped. I have a bachelor's degree in literary studies and I've worked in the publishing industry in some capacity for nearly fifteen years. My online experience with the written word began when I started to review books. At the beginning of this year, I decided to publish my first novel and dive into the deep end.

2. Tell us something about yourself that no one knows, something totally random. *puppy face* Please?

Faith: I'm not a romance author with a hot husband at home. I'm still trying to figure the whole love thing out.

3. Did you always want to be an author? If not, then what did you want to be?

Faith: I'm more of a behind-the-scenes person. I never thought I'd have the guts to put myself out there as a published author. I always hoped I'd one day have the courage and I guess that day has finally arrived. Sometimes it's good to surprise yourself.

4. Okay. Now we will get to your (and our) favourite part! Tell us about your books.

Faith: My books are crazy. Some people love them. Some people hate them. They're all written from the heart and I try to infuse as much genuine emotion into them as possible. I like to keep them fast-paced so readers don't get bored and I try to shake things up by doing unconventional things. I'm willing to shock readers with a head-scratcher of an ending. I'm up for radically changing a character's personality in a series. I like to explore themes that most would never put together like 9/11 and romance. My brain just likes to think outside the box and either you get it or you don't (and I'm okay with it if you don't!).

5. You write books that fall under the New Adult genre. Many people define NA in my different ways. What, according to you, is New Adult? (Age, storyline, etc.)

Faith: For me, New Adult characters are somewhere between eighteen and twenty-five. That's really my only main requirement because there are so many different directions a writer can go in from there. I don't like to stifle creativity. The plot can take so many different directions with characters in that age group. It's such a freeing concept for a writer because there are no limits to what you can do. You can make it erotic or not. You can set it in college or not. You can deal with more serious issues or not. There's a whole range of emotions you can tap into that aren't really found in other categories or genres. Discovering your individuality. Learning what you want out of life. Falling for someone who isn't your first romance. That's why I love it.

6. I admire how you believe that life isn't a bed of roses and reality can be harsh. When writing the Heartbeat series, did you ever feel that readers (who love happy endings) would have problems with the way Heartbeat ended?

Faith: First off, I never thought anyone would even read HEARTBEAT. I thought it would be pretty much ignored. I was a debut author with a book no one had ever even heard of. So to get the reaction that it did was pretty overwhelming. I wasn't prepared for how passionate readers were over the ending. But I guess it means I did my job if I got them to feel something, even if they wanted to kill me :-)

7. As you've shown in Unexpected, 9/11 drastically affected the whole of US and the world as well. I've read that the book is very close to your heart. Can you tell us about the medley of emotions that you experienced while writing the story?

Faith: It was a catharsis really. I've been harboring the emotions of that day for a long time. I don't think they'll ever completely go away. I'll probably be carrying them around with me for the rest of my life but it was comforting to receive the reader feedback from people who went through something similar. That's all I ever wanted was to connect with others so we could all feel - 'Hey, at least we're not alone.' And for me, that's the power of writing at its core.

8. You are one of the most friendliest authors that I know and you take a lot of joy in connecting with readers. Do the readers, and their likes, dislikes, opinions, views, etc., in any way, help you decide what goes into your stories?

Faith: Absolutely! I always listen to what the readers have to say. Like I said, I never thought I'd have readers so just the fact that people took the time to read my work is extremely humbling. I want to give as much back to them as I can for investing their time in me. But conversely, I have to follow my heart and where it takes me when it comes to letting my creative spirit flow through my writing. If I started to follow trends or write what other people expect, then I wouldn't be remaining true to myself and I'd feel like a fraud.

9. What's next in store for you after the Heartbeat series is completed?

Faith: Well, there's going to be another release TAKE ME NOW (August 2013 or sooner) before the release of the third HEARTBEAT book, I AM YOURS (October 2013).

I just hope to keep writing and publish at least one novel every two months or so. The ebook phenomenon is such a fast-moving animal and readers are inundated with new titles on what appears to be a daily basis. So to remain current and keep your name out there, you have to publish a lot and quite frequently. At least in my case, because I'm not a 'known' author.

10. Who are some of your favourite authors and what are some of your favourite books?

Faith: Two of my favorites that I've read this year are IF YOU STAY by Courtney Cole and EASY by Tammara Webber. They just hit it out of the park, in my opinion. They're soft, yet they're gritty. They're real,  yet they're swoon-worthy. I always enjoy the combination of hard and soft.

We also have a round of fun questions lined up for you, Faith!
This includes "Favourites" and "If you could..." All you have to do is give us a one-worded or a one-lined  answer to the questions below. It will be seriously cool if you give us a "why?" for the "If you could..." questions!
These are going to be difficult and easy for the same reason- you get to pick only one!
So have  a blast and here we go!

1. Favourite colour? Blue because it's calming.

2. Favourite food?  Pasta because I like it wherever I go, you can't mess it up.

3. Favourite drink? Diet Coke because it keeps my brain functioning.

4. Favourite word? Hope because if you don't have that, you have nothing.

5. Favourite place? Anywhere in nature (the beach, the woods, etc.) because it's where I feel most at home.

6. Favourite singer/ band? Pink because she's the real deal.

7. If you could take only one author out for dinner, who would you take?

Sorry for this one, I'd have to take two. KellyHashway and Meradeth Houston because we've never met in person but they support me on a daily basis and that says a lot.

8. If you could keep only one book with you, which book would you keep?

THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE because of the beauty of the language and it would give me a lot of food for thought.

9. If you could take only one book boyfriend on a secluded island with you, who would you take?

ADAM from my HEARTBEAT series because we would be able to help each other work out our problems. Yeah, really sexy. I know :-)

10. If you could listen to only one song for the rest of your life, which song would you choose?
I WILL WAIT by Mumford and Sons because of the utter humility of the lyrics, they inspire me.

Thank you so much for spending time with us today, Faith! It was a pleasure to have you over. And we hope you had a great time. Feel free to stop by anytime you feel like it.
We wish you lots of happiness and success in the future. Happy reading and happy writing!
