Feature and Follow is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read.
Today's question is:
Q: Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?
My answer:
I don't mind it at all. In fact, I like it when a book that I am reading reminds me of another book that I've already read.
But of course, it should be noted that there is a difference between 'being inspired by something' and 'copying something'. ;)
As for retellings, I like how they make you look at a story with a whole new perspective.
Fanfic is cool for leisure reading or when I'm in the mood to explore a story more.
What about you? What are your thoughts?
Follow us and we'll follow you back.
Happy Friday and happy reading, everyone!
Sarika
Yes, exactly. I don't mind if some elements are similiar to those of another book, but if it's basically the same story, then I don't feel like that's okay.. at all.
ReplyDeleteAnd I *love* fanfics, but I wouldn't spend money on them, I think.
Patricia // My Hop
So glad to know you agree with me! And yes, I don't think I'd spend money on fanfic either. Thanks for stopping by, Patricia! :)
DeleteGood answer. "Inspire by" puts a whole different spin on the tale, because it acknowledges what came before. It's authors who try to hide their influences that tend to annoy me.

Bob @ Beauty in Ruins
Totally agree! It's definitely appreciated when there's a little 'inspired by...' note in a book that's been inspired by another book. Thanks for stopping by, Bob! :)
DeleteI agree! I like reading books that have the same elements. That's why I love paranormals! I love reading all the different ways to see vampires and werewolves and fae and all sorts of other creatures that get told over and over in different ways!
ReplyDeleteHere's my Follow Friday
Have a GREAT weekend!
Old Follower :)
Yay! :D I'm so glad you're with me on this one. Thanks for stopping by, Jessica! :)
DeleteI agree, but it's that line between inspiration and copying that gets a little too blurry for me sometimes. I'd much rather read something that is only vaguely inspired by, than I'm pretty sure is heavily copied from. Great answer! And thanks for stopping by my blog :D
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree. Like I said, inspiration is cool, but a straight carbon copy... not so cool, eh? Thanks for stopping by, Anya! :)
DeleteOne of the best answers I've seen this week. I completely agree.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my FF and following, new follower here :)

DeleteWell said about there being a difference between being inspired by an idea and just copying it! Copycat books aren't my thing at all.
ReplyDeleteOld follower. Thanks for stopping by!
Totally agree and glad to know you agree with me! Thanks for stopping by, Lee! :)
DeleteHopping through. I agree. Fanfic helps me get to know a story better and think about it more.
ReplyDeleteMy Hop
Exactly! So I turn to fanfic when I really want to know more about a story. Thanks for stopping by, Alison! Always nice to have the host leave a comment. :D Thanks!
DeleteGood answer, and your right: there is a difference between inspired by and copying. Thanks for sharing, new follower via GFC :) Here's my FFF

ReplyDeleteAudrey @ Her Fiction Fix
Yes, exactly! Fanfic is the kind of stuff to read when there isn't much else to read, which- though rare- does happen at times. Thanks for stopping by, Audrey!
DeleteLike your answer. I especially like a good retelling.

DeleteThanks for stopping by, Billy! :)
ReplyDeleteStopping by from last week, because I'm a bit behind! Anyway, I agree...similar books can be familiar and comfortable. As long as something is different enough so that I don't feel I'm reading the same book over!
ReplyDeleteFollowing!
